Annoying ankle bitters and their owners
Where I live, in Portugal, we had, until I received my Duffy, a problem with a gentleman who used to walk with his dog, a Serra da Estrela - portuguese breed of very large working dogs which can easily reach 140-150lbs - unleashed and, most times, out of his sight because he walked and allowed the dog to stay behind or he stopped talking to someone and did not mind about her anymore. Some of my neighbours were having problems with their dogs because this big Serra da Estrela would, frequently, attack them. At a point when someone was walking the dog in the street and would spot Zara and her nuts owner somewhere near, that same someone would immediately either go home or enter in one of the neighbours' yards in search for a safe harbour until Zara and the owner passed.
I used to say to my neighbours (this before I had Duffy) that they were allowing too much to that man and to the dog. That they should call the police given that the dog could not walk unleashed on the street. In Portugal it is now allowed by law to walk them unleashed. It does not represent a problem with well behaved dogs but with walking problems such as Zara is it becomes a big problem.
Then I got Duffy. It happened a first time, Zara spotted Duffy, I did the same as my neighbours do and entered a neghbours' yard for those two to pass. On that same moment I called the owner and told him precisily that what was happening at that very moment would not happen again given that I would call the police. One of sentences that I used was precisily, that my neighbours were being far too complacent with him but I am not so, at all. Well, some days after it did happen again and worst given that when I opened my gate she jumped inside my house before I could notice her, trying to bite Duffy and me. Well, it was just the time to get rid of Zara with a pine stick (did not hurt her just threatened her enough for her to exit immediatelly), reach the phone and call the police. They arrived shortly after and in time to see the dog walking totally unatended and the owner speaking to someone. To note here that the owner did not even notice that Zara had entered my house because he was distracted with his talk.
It was easy after the arrival of the police. A complaint was filled, some of my neighbours came to see what was happening with the police at my door and some of them also joined the complaint. Given that the police caught him he was notified on the spot to pay the fine and, from that day, we did not see that idiot again anywhere near my street.
This is why I urge you and everybody that feels threatened by a dog who has an inconscient owner taking care of him to call the police and follow the relevant procedures regarding this problem. It is better to play safe by calling the police than sorry by going to the vet after some real problem arises with either our dogs or the others.
I think some people with them think they aren't big enough to hurt people or other dogs, but they can. So as with any dog you should have control of it and on a leash when not in your fenced in yard. If I ever let my little ones loose(which I wouldn't do) and they ran up to another dog and bugged them like that, I wouldn't blame the other dog for telling them to back off.
