i am gettinga 6 month old boxer

Congrats on your new addition! In regards to housebreaking, I would treat him just like an 8 week old pup. Outside after every meal, naps, playtime and during regular intervals in between - always accompanied by you, of course.
I would also arm yourself with something that your dog will flip for food wise and reserve these as the reward when he's succesfully eliminated outside. What you want to do is make "outside" the most fantastic place to do his business, so have a party.
I would definitely invest in a crate, they are handy when you cannot keep both eyes on the pup. Until he's earned it, do not allow him to roam free, unsupervised. Tethering him to you with a leash works quite well and it makes it easier to head off any accidents since he's right there at your feet. Be patient and consistent and you will have a housetrained dog in no time. Good luck!

I agree crate training is a huge help especially when you’re potty training. You need to set the dog up for success so that means eliminating his opportunities to make mistakes. In other words he must be given no freedom until he is 100% reliable. If he can’t be with you then put him in the crate because the more “accidents” in the house the more likely it will become a habit. Also if he does have an accident use Natures Miracle to clean it up with so you eliminate his smell.

Make sure your introduce the crate as a positive thing. Take the time to acclimate him to the crate properly. Put treats in there, feed in there, toys, something to chew. And don’t close the door at first.

Also it helps to get on a schedule and stay on it. Dogs love routine. So do your best to eat & take potty breaks at the same time each day.

Since he is older he may be easier to train! Get something nice and soft and some toys for his crate. Be sure everything is washable since you will be washing it a lot! We keep our "crate toys" only in their crates. That way they have something special in their crate and they can go in whenever they want too.

I never put mine in a crate so I can't add to that... and the
house training anyone knows it takes a lot of consistancy and
patience...

so hang in there and it will pay off in the end...

Napoleon was 6 months old when I got him too. He was house trained, but not crate trained. He cried for a week or so then settled down. It was really hard to hear him crying at night because I knew he had been mistreated, but I knew it was for the best. Now he loves his crate.
