Yesterday I posted about my puppy Lola and how she ran down the stairs and crashed into the banister then started limping. Well, today she was still limping so I decided to take her to the vet. Well, the vet thinks she has a broken pinky toe and she bandaged it. She said that her right back leg b- pinky toe was swollen and she did not x-ray it because she said that she would treat it the same with - with a wrap. So they wrapped her leg in a pink bandage with a lot of sticky tape around it. The problem is Lola HATES it. She is biting at it and trying to pull it off. I am doing everything I can to distract her so she does not bite it but it is not going to be easy. She wants her to try and wear it for 2 weeks!!! Any ideas on how to get her not to bite it. They put some pepper spray on it to get her not to bite but she does not seem to care. `

It sounds like she needs an Elizabethan collar (E collar, lampshade collar) or a Bite-Not collar. If she's really determined to remove the bandage, very little will stop a determined puppy! Good luck!

Do it now before that bandage comes off! Re - bandaging ANYTHING is the worst! You can never quite do it like the vet. I would most definitely get an e-collar. They're fairly cheap and readily available at any pet store.

Ugh!

Well, things are worse now. The vet tried the e-collar but she went crazy and the vet was afraid she was going to hurt herself so they told me to keep an I on it and spray it with bitter apple to get her to not bite it. Well, let me just tell you that this is easier said than done. By 10PM, she had made a huge hole in the wrap and was removing the gauze. I tried everything I could and it did not work. I had to call the vet and they told me go ahead and remove the wrap. They said that since it is her pinky toe and she does not put any weight on it that we should try to let it heal on its own. If it is not better in a few days they want me to bring her back in. What do you all think of this? Does that sound safe?

Pinky toe?

If its any help, my puppy broke his pinky toe(on his right back leg too) right around the age of 4 months, my vet just put him on a little something for the pain for a week and told me to keep an eye on him, not running around and playing. Last time we were at the the vet, asked him to check it, he checked out fine. Now you could never tell by the way he runs around the house. My vet said its also pretty common for a dog to break a toe, and that most the time it goes un-noticed. Hope this comforts you a little.

Thank you

Oh my gosh - thank you so much!!! That makes me feel so much better. I can see that her pinky toe is swollen but it does not seem to bother her at all. The vet sent her home with 4 days worth of Rimadyl to help with the inflamation. I am so glad that things got better for your puppy. I am going to try and keep Lola calm and pray for the best. Thanks again.

Thanks so much for asking about Lola. She seems to be doing better. We did not have another wrap put on and decided to try and keep her calm for a few days and see what happens. She is no longer limping and the swelling seems to have gone down. I am going to take her back to the vet this week to have the look at it again but I think she is going to be ok. Thanks again.

road to recovery

Good to hear she is doing better. Sugar Ray has a wrap on his front paw where the IV needle was. He keeps trying to take it off but the vet sprayed it with something fierce and he doesn't seem to like that taste on his mouth. It was something along the lines of bitter apple but with some more force. At least that is how it was described to us. Good that you don't have to deal with it anymore. Sounds like she is already on the road to recovery.
