I've Been Reading Through Some Postings And Found Hystiocytoma On An Ear And The Face. Rommel Has Been Diagnosed With One On His Foot. It's Pretty Big And The Vet Said It Needs To Be Surgically Removed. Does Everyone Else Think So? Some Mentioned Benadine.

My dog Tyson had Hystiocytoma right outside of his ear. A member on boxer world say that Betandine should dry it out. I use it for about 3 weeks. I scrubbed it twice a day and not it's completely gone:)

Our girl, had one on her elbow when she was around 1 year old, we had it surgically removed. I did hear someone mention putting that Benadine on it too, give it a try and see. We had one at another location and after a month or two it went away on its own.

They can get them anywhere. I have seen them on my own dogs on the ear, lip, armpit and top of the head.

Do try the betadine first. It can't hurt. There is a gal in my town that I was helping with ear taping. I spotted one on the elbow. She had just been to the vet for a diagnosis and $150.00 later, it was a hystiocytoma and with a surgical removal recomendation. I had her start with the betadine and a month later, it was all gone.

Give it a good scrubbing twice a day and don't rinse it off. Just let it dry. You should see it reducing within a week, if the betadine is going to help. It will take a little longer to go completely away.

Maggie just developed one of them. My vet is giving her antibiotics so that it doesn't get infected and a topical ointment. She says they get them a lot (boxers) and are usually benign and come and go. She says she'd only recommend surgery as a last result.

Good luck

hi there,
Rocky has one on his ear and the vet said it would be right under 200 dollars for removing it so we set the date.....well the next day he had an appointment at the dermatologist I had him check it and he gave us a betamethasone valerate cream 12.00 and we put it on him 3 times a day and at night dad cleans it EVERY NIGHT with hydrogen peroxide and 10 days later it is almost gone. Needless to say we canceled the appointment with the vet and arent happy with her recommendation to have surgery. His dermatologist even did a biopsy and said it was fine for free! He is great the vet on the other hand we arent to fond of her lately so will be using another one. Let us know how your baby is doing.

Am I over reacting?

Well, I've heard from the vet and it'll cost me 350.00 to have the growth removed from Rommel's foot. That's in addition to the 370.00 visit we had when it was diagnosed. Granted I took him in for a little toenail problem (perfectly fine) and the vet jumped all over the growth.

When I asked her what she thought it was, she looks up and tells me. "Well, I just hope it's not a tumor." I'm thinking cancer for a whole week.

He's my first dog as an adult dog owner (I've grown up with dogs) and he's my baby.

Anyway, reading your responses, I feel pretty darn good about trying the betadine and watching it disappear. I haven't even called the vet's office back. It makes me think that they could have educated me on hystiocytomas and said that it could go away and to wait and see. But apparently they don't have Rommel's best interest at heart and only want to be paid.

Why would I subject him to anesthesia and the ordeal of surgery when it wouldn't be medically necessary??? I am I over reacting here??

Maybe I should just switch vets??? He's only 10 1/2 months old and has plenty of time to get acquainted with a new doctor.

Thanks for the help.

No, you are not overreacting. That sounds like a lot of money for visit & the surgery. Our boxer had one removed 6 years ago, don't remember the price, but not $350. Hey, it does not hurt to change vets if you are not happy. I miss our old vet who retired, the new one I am not so keen on & I too may be switching. I hope Rommel's bump clears up real soon:)

Thanks Linda. Since I don't have chidlren of my own yet, I tend to treat Rommel like a child and we all want what's best for them. I think a new vet is key. Glad I'm not alone.

hystiocytoma or mast cell

I just got back from taking Rocco to the vet because he has a lump on his cheek. The vet took a sample and reviewed it under the microscope but could not determine if it was a hystiocytoma or a mast cell. It has nearly tripled in size in just about 3 weeks. The vet has recommended surgically removing it, so the lab can determine what it is. This is all new to me and I don't want to put him through anything unnecessary.
