My husband and I have a beautiful flashy fawn 3 1/2 month old boxer named Zoe. We absolutely adore her. queenicon Besides Zoe, my husband has always wanted a German Shorthair and we now have an opportunity to get a puppy this weekend. This is great because Zoe loves to play and would love to have a permanent playmate. It is also great timing for us as Zoe just graduated from puppy kindergarten and is pretty well behaved for a boxer ;) . However, my husband wants to make sure that the Shorthair learns to hunt. He is concerned that Zoe will hinder the Shorthairs learning and teach the Shorthair to box rather than hunt . :D We called Zoe's vet and he said that it might affect the hunting dog in a negative way but I believe that it is all in the way you raise your dogs. Zoe is totally in to Agility anyway so I think that it would be good to have another dog that hunts. What do you think??? I really need some opinions/advice on this one.

Thanks,
Kristi

My parents own two Brittanys (gun dogs), and their hunting instincts are very strong. When my boxer comes over to play, they run around and be stupid. However, the second a rabbit dares catch their eye, the Brittanys are long gone (after it.) As long as your husband does the hunting training sans the boxer, I really see no problem in the two co-existing. A bit of advice though, you might want to toss any cedar dog beds, as I've heard that the strong scent can "ruin" a hunting dog's nose. :(Then again, it could just be a hickish legend.

Boxers were once used to hunt Boar in Germany, you know. :p

i don't see how your boxer could hinder the hunting dog, the hunting dog will also have to go through training, (I assume your husband will do this?) when in a training session just make sure the boxer doesn't desturb him. and when "work" is over, they can play! My husband also wants a hunting dog. (weimeraner), but I have heard so many things about them, I don't think I want one.

Thanks for your replies. They have been very helpful and comforting. Looks like we are going to go ahead with the new Shorthair puppy. It should be interesting having two very energetic puppies around the house. foolicon

It's funny that you brought this up. My soon to be father in law just got a german shorthair puppy a couple of months ago. She is in constant training and although they aren't always around eachother my two play often with his puppy. So far it has not affected the training but I cannot speak on the fact that they don't live together. Whatever you decide I hope it works out.

Beagle and Boxer

Hi there

This is my first time to post on this site all the was from Ireland. I have a beagle named Boomer and a boxer called Buffy, They get on geat and nothing would deter Boomer from a good scent even the mad boxer baby bouncing around him.

I don't think that once a hunting dog of any type is trained there is no interrupting them, they just get so clued into what they are trained to do.

Hi there I also have a boxer girl named Zoe and recently adopted a hound for a sister for Zoe we are almost positive she is part black and tan Im not sure what else she is but she LOVES to hunt I dont think theirs anyway to "Take the hunt out of the dog"One of my dads favorite sayings. He raises bluetick coon hounds. But I definatly belive the saying because Jada can completly ignore Zoe if she thinks she smells something. lol Good luck with the new pup im sure it will be loads of fun.
