Howdy all - new to the boards.

My wife Kandice and I have 2 kids, Drew (3) and Jordan (15mos). We're in the process of considering getting a dog for the family.

We're not yet sure what the right breed is just yet, but we're doing some research. Boxer's sure do sound like a great breed. :)

Have a good Monday!

welcome to boxer world.:) this is the right place to research the breed. good luck with your choice. and I am sure you will find that the breed loves kids.:)

Welcome to the site! And, here is my 2 cents on getting a boxer. They are THE BEST family pet you can find. My parents always had boxers, and I am SO LUCKY that I grew up with them. They are Loyal, intelligent (when they want to be ;) ), sweet, considerate, and most of all, they are just people dogs. They would rather be with people than other animals. Also, they are very, very in tune with your family's feelings. A lot of times, we take for granted that a dog that is so active and funny doesn't have depth in his soul, this is NOT true with a boxer, They are so understanding and thoughtful. And, they have the patience of a saint with children. Also, I guarantee, they will make you laugh everyday. They are very active, though, and if not properly exercised and given attention, they can become very destructive. Not to mention, there is NOT a better looking dog anywhere. Good luck with your decision, but you can't go wrong getting a boxer, not that I'm biased or anything ;)

I totally agree! I also wanted to mention Rescue's! They are a great way to find a perfect fit for your family! Even if you decide not to get a boxer they are plenty of dogs in need! Welcome to BW!

What a sucky foster-mom I am, I didn't even mention rescues!!! Rescues are great, your guy will come temperment and health tested, and USUALLY crate trained and housebroken. Good luck again!

Thanks all!

Thanks all - actually, I hadn't even considered the Boxer breed until my wife pointed me to a white boxer girl that she found on Petfinder. It's not a boxer rescue, but it's still an adoption.

I really do want to work with a person or group to help find the right dog with the right personality for us. We already agreed on no puppies. Actually - we haven't totally agreed on getting a dog just yet, but my daughter just lights up when the neighbors dog is around. My wife really wants one and thinks it's the right time and I'm still undecided on it. It's a lot of work and I want to be sure that I'm 110% commited to that before we adopt a pet.

See - we actually adopted another dog a few years ago from a buddy who had to go overseas in the military. We were childless at the time and everything was great. We knew the dog wasn't friendly with other animals and kids. He was a black lab and a great dog for just the two of us. Well, long story short - birth control didn't control all that well. We tried to work with our dog and get him to warm up to our new son. We tried so hard to make it work, but in the end, we weren't able to give our dog all the attention he deserved because we always had to keep him and our son separate. We finally decided (when my wife got prego again) that it was best to find a new home for our dog. We listed him on petfinder and within about 8 hours we had someone who wanted to come see him. Nikos is now a firehouse dog and has 2 much older skin kids to play with him and I know he's much happier now. That was the most heartbreaking thing I've had to do in a really long time - if ever. I don't ever want to have to do that again - that's why I'm being so careful in my decision to even get a pet or not.

Anyway - thanks for all the kind words of encouragement. I know that whatever we chose and whenever it happens, it will be a great thing. I have done a bit of reading on the boxer breed on this forum, so I'm really starting to get attached to the idea of a boxer.

Hello and welcome to you and your family! I think it's great that you are doing your research before jumping in to adopting a dog. I have a daughter who just turned 4 and her and Ty are awesome together! He always checks on her when she is crying and covers her face with sloppy smooches-it's guaranteed to turn her tears into laughter! He has been a great addition to our family and I can't imagine not having him. I love that Haley and Ty will grow up together-they are the best of friends. Good luck to you and be sure to let us know what you decide.

Boxers N Babies

Hi,

We just brought a baby home on Friday and I was a little concerned how things would go. Our boxer took to the baby immediately, very gentle and only occasional licks (no baths :)). He has become so intentive in the last 4 days that I can hardley believe it! I am very bias towards boxers and always told people how great they are with kids (can't keep the neigbor kids out of the yard). But now I truely know firsthand (I have a few pics posted) what a wonderful, loyal companion they are to the entire family, not just the master. Good luck in your search!
