How to train to lay down?

I have a 14 month old male fawn which i have had for a few months. I have been trying to train him using commands such as sit and stay but i am having a hard time teaching him how to lay down. Any suggestions?

We used a treat in our closed hand and put our hand on the floor and as soon as they layed down they got the treat then we added "down" to it as they were laying down.

Gus would NOT lay down following a hand with treat. He just followed it with his nose and walked if he had to. So I sat on the floor with my knee bent and lured him to crawl under my leg. As his belly touched the floor I said 'down' and gave him the treat. He learned quickly after that!
