I know that Max would love to do this . So how can we get started? We live in Indiana

First of all...has Max taken obedience training? Agility is off leash so the dog must be very well trained and listen to you. My trainer requires that any dog going into agility has passed beginner and intermediate. By that time they are obeying commands off leash with distractions. If he has already taken obedience you can start looking for a club or a class.

Check out boxerworld for links to agility. You may be able to locate a local club. You could also call local trainers. If they do not train agility they can refer you to someone who can.

Good luck. We are planning on enrolling Brutus in agility. My trainer recently moved and will be starting classes shortly. I can't wait :)

Where I go to agility class requires either passing a Level 1 obedience class OR passing the CGC (Canine Good Citizen) test.

It sounds like you need to enroll him in Level 1 (basic obedience) first. If he has never been to classes, or never been out around alot of other dogs, he will need some *socialization* skills also.

Good luck and have fun!!

WE have a camper that we used this summer. THere was alot of other dogs there. He was quiet , and very well behaved . My husbands uncle was a trainer ,and he trained my husband to do the same.On the lesh Max will do anything you ask.

The real trick is off leash. Off leash is a lot harder than on leash. The dog must obey for the sake of it, not because they are on leash.

In our class right now most is off leash. It is a lot harder to get a dog to sit and stay when you walk away and there are other dogs nearby. Any little distraction sends them all away. Its quite funny to watch the doggie jailbreaks in class :)

I would advise intermediate, off leash classes and once youve passed that start agility classes.

Hi Jamie, I think the requirements vary from class to class. In the agility course we run we do not require a dog to have had any formal obedience lessons but we do require them to have a good relationship with their handler, come when called and have general good doggy manners around other dogs and people. It may be an idea to phone around the agility places in your area so you know what is required :)

I live in Indiana, we do our training in Bloomington. I don't know if you are near Bloomington or not but Canine Companion Training is where we train. For agility your dog only needs to know basic obedience commands. I'm not sure if they have to go through the course or not. Pru just started agility Saturday and all training is with a leash. So if your Boxer does his stuff on leash I think you would be fine with agility at CCT. It's lots of fun and great exercise for you and the dog.

I think the age is a matter of opinion. Most people tell you not to start until after they are a year old, I think. (I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong) Something to do with the bones not being fully developed until they are a certain age.

Where I train Megan they will take them under that age limit as long as they have had a level 1 obedience class.
