How to get Thyroid pills down easily

My Raleigh has just been diagnosed with Thyroidism, takes the 2 pills a day but he's a devil and it's so difficult to get the pills down.

I know not to give with food but am wondering if anyone has any ideas for an easy way to get him to take them?

Does anyone give the pills with say a little piece of meat? (Would that be the wrong thing to do?) Would love some suggestions!

Try Pill Pockets. They are made by Greenies. Bailey has to take medication and she thinks of these as treats - very easy. Good luck.

Brutus gets Thyroxine 0.7mg twice a day right now. My vet and the manufacturer of the pill has said it can be given with food. The pill is so small I throw it in with his bowl of food and he eats it right down. Or I pop it down his throat. He is due next week for his 4 week level. So I'll see if giving it with food is making any difference with his levels. If they are back up where they belong, I'm not gonna worry about food. Otherwise with my work schedule and his eating schedule there really isn't any time of day I can give it to hm on an empty stomach. He at one point was on 9 pills a day for infections, etc. I wrapped his food in raw turkey and he sucked them right down.

You can use a small amount of food to get it down, just not a full meal, and never with dairy. I use a spoonful a canned dog food.

Hope Raleigh starts feeling better real soon! My Tyson has made great progress in the two weeks he has been on the medication!

I read that you shouldn’t give it with food because it will not be absorbed as well. So you can give it with food but you may need a higher dose of medication to achieve the same results. I would just rather use a smaller dose and wait the hour to feed.

I make a small bowl of oatmeal with some blueberries and keep it in the fridge and make a tiny oatmeal ball and stick the pill in it. This way it doesn’t have meat or cheese and it’s always ready. I make a new bowl every three days or so. I did read you could use a small marshmallow or small amount of peanut butter also. :)

A very small amount of peanut butter or a mini marshmellow were suggested to me by Dr. Dodds at HemoPet. Good luck!

Wow, thanks everyone!

Pleased to hear I can use a little something, I even went to the store and bought a pill contraption for getting it in his mouth! :) did not work though, then my husband diluted the pill and put it in a syringe with water.. spoiled baby and took ages getting it in, little devil, so will thankfully start tomorrow by putting it in a little food.

The only way Sable will take any pill is with peanut butter. I've tried bits of meat etc and it just doesn't work for her. I put a blob of peanut butter on my finger, put the pill in the middle (making sure it gets covered with the peanut butter), open her mouth and stick it to the roof of her mouth. So far has worked every time. Thankful she doesn't have to take pills very often .
