How soon can you start to leash train?

Buddy is 9 weeks old today. Is he old enough to strat training him on a leash? I tried to put the leash on him but he wanted nothing to do with that. He kept pulling away and backing up. I was afraind he was going to hurt himself so I took the leash off. I know I need to take him for daily walks but since he doesn't like the leash, I can't.

London (11 weeks old) isn't a big fan of her leash either... once it goes on she has a seat and stares at me with a look that says "What the heck is this?"

Once the leash comes off she will follow me step for step...

Don't be concerned about taking him for daily walks yet. He's still young enough to burn energy with play times.
This is actually a great time to be getting him used to the leash indoors. ;) I would put it on and just let him drag it around the house, (supervised of course).
Then I would suggest following the advice given in this training article. ;)

Good luck!

Due to where we live Lennox needs to be on a leash to go outside. So He started on it the first say we got him at 7 and a half weeks old, and he does a GREAT job. It's the one thing that we have not really had a problem with. I just say hang in there. Your little one with get it soon. Lennox is 9 weeks now and knows that when the leash comes out to go to the door and sit. :) I am so proud.

We started Venus on a leash about week 7 or 8 (we got her at 6 weeks...I know that was early). But she took to it fine at first, then started acting up on it a couple weeks later. When she started acting up, we bought a harness and she does so much better on that, and I'm not scared of hurting her throat. :) Maybe try a harness? Our puppy class trainer suggests the one that has a ring on the chest area to clip the leash in the front, but I think the dog will still be able to bite the leash, and I think it flips the dog over if you pull it at all (Which is what the trainer says is good so the dog looks at you???) We have one that clips on her back and she can't really get at the leash part and if we pull it, it lifts her upper body off the ground without flipping her over.
Hope this helps...

We started leash training @ 8 weeks....let her walk around the house dragging the leash to get use to it. Were at the point that she will walk with it while I hold the leash, but my issue is she will walk down the driveway and then sit.....wont leave the driveway! lol Figure when she is ready she will let me know!

Yep I use Bruce's car seat belt harness for walking him. It has two 'D' rings on the back so I can pick one or t'other, or both, to clip his leash onto. Sounds like what lilboxerbaby has too. I swear by it becuase you know their throat and neck can never be hurt. Only problem I find with it is I can't turn him! If he has a sit-down strike (which happens quite often!) I can't really employ the technique that's been recommended here to suddenly change direction to keep him focused on me. With the harness it's kinda like they're on a swivel in the middle of their backs and it's only the human that ends up going round in circles! :D Maybe that's why the vet recommended the ring on the chest area? Although I can't see how your dog wouldn't end up walking sideways with that?

We put a leash on Tyson and just let him walk around with it on for a while. When he got used to that, we would walk him through the yard. When he got to about 16 weeks, we got a harness with a clasp in the back. Did the same thing with the harness, just let him get used to it. Now he knows when he sees the harness and leash, it's a walk!! Still working on the pulling some though. Slowly getting it.

Haha, Bruce seems to have cottoned on to what "shall we go for a walk?" means too! I get the harness out and kneel on his blanket in the lounge, then I have to wait for around 5 mins until Bruce has finished his wee puppy pre-walk pantomime! He gets down in the 'lets play' position with his wee tail going ballistic, barking and woo-wooing up at me, but if I make a move to get the harness on him he scampers away then bounds right back again, repeat this times, oh at least 4 or 5 times until I've finished laughing my head off and get my 'okay, Mum's serious now' tone of voice on. He seems to have a real love/hate relationship going on with his harness :D
