i wouldn't recommend letting him sleep in your bed unless you want him to sleep there every night. dogs are very used to routines and if you start letting him in your bed at night, they will get accustomed to it and essentially you will have only created a new problem instead of correcting the first. new dog owners sometimes make the mistake of catering to their dogs too much. keep in mind that you are the pack leader and that you lay the rules down on what goes and what doesn't. they have to obey and follow your rules. however, they will not learn to obey your rules if you give into their whining, crying, or barking. you have to remain consistent. even if you are consistent for a month and give into one night, takes you all the way back to square one. it's tough in the beginning, but it will get better.

Thanks, I have read all of these things too. I got a download book by Sue Chapple. It has some great thing, but I haven't had alot of time to sit on my at home computer. But through BW & that book (I believe it is Boxer Secrets) I have learned alot. I try hard to abide, it is difficult once you bring puppy home!! And he doesn't eliminate in his kennel. (he did one time) I keep in in a boarded off area in this room with paper. I made this mistake with my first dog (mixed breed) about paper training. I have staked some urine saoked cloth in the yard & get him when he is eliminating, and take him to that spot. But he seems a bit afraid of outside, and runs back to the door, unless we play, then he will go in & pee. nonoicon. It all takes patients I think!

so

so at almost 12 weeks old, should i not need to get up half way during the night to let her out? should i take her out at 11 to potty then let her be until i get up at 6am? thats 7hrs, is that too long for a pup at night? i know during the day i will have to let her out but im just saying at night in her crate.

thanks,
joe

at 12 weeks i still would get up once throughout the night to let her out, just to be safe. you don't want to set your dog up for failure, so allowing her to go once in the night will help her out and avoid mistakes.

my champ-
sounds like you're on your way. the soaked urine cloth is a good idea in order to help her eliminate in the same spot and induce her into going.
try taking her out on a leash and "play statue". that is, only allow her enough slack to walk around the urine soaked cloth area and you. allow her to circle around it until she gets the urge. if you start her on this habit then she will learn to eliminate quicker. you can also give her a command such as "go potty" or "hurry up" as she is going and she'll soon learn that is her cue to do her thing. after she gets done doing her deed, reward and praise her and then allow her to play. this will teach her that when she is let out she is to relieve herself first and then play. your right, it does take time and a great deal of patience, but it sounds like you're on the right track.

keep us posted guys. ;)

Housetraining is inevitably one of the hardest/challenging things about those darling pups! The general rule I heard over and over is to expect them to hold their bladders an hour longer than they are old...example: If the pup is 3 months old, they can 'generally' hold it 4 hours. Of course this is a generalization and has to be tweeked! We took Sasha's water away at 8 every night and I took her out at 4"30 in the morning every night until she was at least 4-5 months old....I guess i got in HER routine!
As far as the crate goes, we SWORE to adhere to it at night, but those little yelps and cries broke our hearts as I am a big softie...She has been in the bed ever since....I agree, if you don't want to keep her there, then don't start it! I personally cannot sleep without her at my feet now!
Good luck!

Some Success

Champ did good last night. We got a little more sleep. I kept him in his crate all night. If he would whine I got up, waited till he was quiet then took him out to potty. (Despite the fact it is a bit chilly out in SD low 50's) It didn't take him long though. He was a bit chilled too, so we went right in after he went (big boy)appicon & I put him right back in the crate & said ni-night. It seemed to work. I Got up @ 1:30,3:15, & 4:30. The problem I am now having is, I started changing him to Chicken Soup puppy food, from purina. I mixed, probley a bit more then normal. I only got a couple of cups from the breeder, I didn't want to have to buy 2 bags. (I guess I could have waited till later, I just wanted him eating something good) Anyway, he now has a bit of the runs. Not real runny, but having to go more. And he did go in the crate. I am worried about him today, because he is a smart cookie & has found a way out of in boarded off area. I didn't want to crate him again if he has those trots. HUMMM!

even though he has diarrhea, still keep him in his crate. crate training is the same whether they have solid stools or runny ones. don't allow him any special treatment now that he is getting crate trained/housebroken or else it will affect his outcome. this will also help make clean up a bit better. what you have to look for now is:

1) maybe give him some canned pumpkin to ease his stomach and firm his stools up. be sure to not feed hime more than you started off with and wait until his stools are firm before increasing the amount of new food mixed in with his old.

2) watch to make sure that he isn't allergic to anything in his new food that could be causing his upset stomach. if his stools firm up and he acts fine than chances are he isn't allergic to anything.

Pumpkin

How much pumpkin do you give? Do you mix it with food or just plain. I guess I am catching on consistancy is the key. You always think you might be helping, like for him not to think he has to releave himself in his crate. I left him out. But I do want to get rid of the paper trianing thing. Putting him in his crate, will he eventually just take pride in his place & not go in there. I worry about the amt of time he is in there before I can let him out during the day, only being about 8weeks old?

A tablespoon or so is all you need and you can add it to his food. :)

We brought our Stella home at 9 weeks. We started with her crate in our bedroom at night, and after about 5 days, she was sleeping through the whole night. We kept her there for another week, then started leaving her crate downstairs where it is during the day. We slept on a matress on the floor next to her for the first two nights down there, and she slept through the night as well.

On the third night, we went upstairs and left her downstairs. She cried every 2 hours, and peed a few times in the crate. We added a divider a few days later, and that almost stopped the peeing. Right now at 14 weeks, she cries at about 2:00am (bed at 10:00pm), and if we ignor her and go down when she is quiet at 3:00am, she has peed in the crate sometimes. Last night she did, the night before she didn't.
