How often do you clip your dog's nails?

It is going to vary from dog to dog like it does for humans. It also depends on how much and what kind of surfaces they walk on. I do my pup's nails about once a month whether they need it or not just to keep them in the habit and to keep the quick nice and short. I don't cut them either, I dremel their nails.

I use a dremel rotary tool like this.

You have to be careful because it runs at very high speeds so it heats up the nail quickly. I alternate between toes every second or so on one foot so it doesn't burn them. It also takes a little bit to get them to not be afraid of the noise the dremel makes. I like doing in this way because when you clip their nails with regular nail clippers, it squeeze down on the nail and can cause pain because there are nerve endings in the quick. With the dremel, I can get real close to the quick without hurting them and the finished nail is nice and rounded off, no sharp edges.

would a vet or groomer have a dremel? How much does a dremel cost?

I think it depends on the vet or the groomer whether or not they have them. I know our local grooming place uses one. I don't remember exactly what I paid for the dremel, I am think $50-60. It is used for other things too. I actually bought it for Stephen as a gift but I borrow it and use it on the dogs. You can get them at Walmart or Lowes or Home Depot, or anywhere like that. They make different models with different speeds but I got a mid to upper quality one since it is used for other things besides dog nails around here.

I get Aashas done once a month. I can't keep him still enough to do it myself so I take him to petsmart. They have one of those devices that files the nails down. It cost me $10. :)

I tried clipping their nails once a month at home but they started getting black nails and that made it hard for me to cut myself so I now I take them to Petsmart, and Gus too. It's $10 a visit and they get a toy out of it every time so I'm sure they don't mind!

I try to clip Samson's about once a month, and then we have a filing session to round off those sharp, sharp edges so he doesn't scratch up the wood floors or injure anyone. He ends up getting a nice, long pedicure. It's actually a pretty big hassle since it takes him a while to settle down into my lap for the treatment :) Plus, I'm terrified of cutting the quicks, so we may switch to a dremel one of these days.
