Rico is six wks and we are feeding him a bowl in the morning and one in the afternoon.the bowl holds 2 cups and he eats it all in an hr or less should we cut it down to 1 cup  i don't want to over feed him or under feed him or we don't want him to have any problems.hope someone can help us to be sure we are doing right by our baby

Rico should still be with his mom and litter...he's much too young to have already left.:( There's lots of info on the boards about why puppies shouldn't leave the litter until *at least* 8 weeks of age...might want to do a search to learn what you can do now to try and prevent future problems due to Rico not having the chance to learn from his litter.

With that said, he should probably be eating about 4x a day. Amounts of food at each meal depend on the dog and food you're feeding...try offering as much food as he'll eat in one sitting. When he walks away, pick up the bowl.

thanks

We knew it was to early for him to leave mom and the rest of the babies.the lady said mom was not feeding them so we figured he was weaned and ready to come home with us.she said he was not nuring on mom and was ready to leave.we contacted our vet and he said we should supplement him with moist and hard puppy food right along with some puppy milk. we are researching more on what he needs to learn and what we can do to help our baby Rico out.

Most puppies at 6 weeks of age are not nursing any longer and are eating on their own. The reason for staying with mom and litter an additional 2 weeks *at the least* isn't for food. Again, there's lots of info about this on the boards...

You could add another meal of meat raw or lightly cooked and 1/2 an egg yolk, no whites as they cant digest this.

For his calcium he could be on an animal type milk formula for a few more weeks at lest. Vets and animal feed outlets have suitable milks.
Remember he is growing rapidly but his tummy capacity is very small.
He needs small nutritious meals frequently and plenty of sleep.

Got some puppy milk

The vet said to get some puppy milk and feed the hard food as well as add water to a bowl of puppy food.we are giving him the milk 3x a day in a bowl thanks for the advice on the meat and egg yolk i will try that Friday.we are being sure he gets plenty of sleep when he doe's not want to play which we enjoy play time.
