How much does your boxer eat?

Cooper is 67 pounds and eats two cups in the morning and 2 cups in the evening. We just switched from Nutro to Wellness after finding out that Nutro has corn & byproducts. He used to throw up pretty much each morning... bile. And, with Wellness he doesn't do that anymore. And, his allergy problems have cleared up. Four cups seems like a lot in comparison to what other dogs are getting but he is lean and not overweight at all. Maybe with Wellness I should be feeding a little less.

We go through exactly 20 lbs a week to the day. If we buy a 20lb bag on Tuesday next Tuesday we are out. Weird huh? They are free fed but they must eat the same every week.

As a rule the better food you feed, the less you need to feed. Of course it varies a lot depending on the activity level of your boxer. I wouldn't be concern with the amount that other people feed. If you your dog is at a healthy weight, you are feeding the right amount and that is all that is important.

We're currently feeding Nature's Variety Prairie (Beef).. and the feeding amount says 2- 2.5 cups per day.. the dogs always seem like they're starving.. i know its higher cal, and more is digested, but do you think its ok to feed a little more if they're getting the exercise? (and if they are not exercising.. then just stick to the quidelines?)

Tess is 66lbs, 21 months. I feed her 2 cups Canidae in the AM and 2 cups in the PM. It's more than recommended on the package but she's very lean and super active.

I agree with Jan. As long as you dogs aren't overweight, what you're feeding them is probably just right.

If you are really concerned with how much each dog is getting, you might switch to feeding them seperately 2-3 times a day instead of free feeding.

Beau is a very lean 56.2lbs., which the vet says is very healthy. He HATES his Eukanuba for large breed puppies, so I mix it with Pedigree (he likes the cheap stuff...go figure). He eats about 2 cups of each a day, but he sneaks bites of Bailey's Pedigree througout the day since it is easier to get to. He used to gobble up all of his food at once, but he's gotten pickier and eats a bite here and there. He loved his Diamond, but he was on the thin side and the vet recommended a better quality food--Eukanuba. He's gained a few pounds, but I'll be switching to something different when I run out of his puppy food since he hates it. I wouldn't worry about how much your dogs eat. As long as they aren't too thin or too heavy, it doesn't really matter. The good thing about having to feed less when you feed higher quality food is that they poop about half as much, too!!!

You may want to do a search on "quality kibbles", as both of the kibbles you mention are not a very good quality at all. In addition, Boxers are not large breed dogs and thus, should not be fed a large breed food.

He loved his Diamond, but he was on the thin side and the vet recommended a better quality food--Eukanuba.

Vets worry me when they think certain foods are "better"..Eukanuba and IAMS are NOT good foods.

A LOT of the Dane people on my Dane list feed Diamond. My dogs do well on it and seem to really like it. Besides I can't afford the expensive stuff.

Where I work we sell Science Diet and I cringe at how many people buy it thinking it is a "good food".

When Hugo was 9-10 months and on the thin side the vet said to feed him adult food rather than puppy food. More fat in the adult food he said.

I don't free feed because Hugo (and Murph when he was alive) wouldn't eat enough, they would just pick at their food so went to 2 feedings.

We are currently feeding Canidae.....Sasha gets 2 cups in the am and 2 cups in the pm....more than the recommended, but she is so skinny i am trying to get her to gain a cpl of pounds....Telmar is chubby and i cute him back to 1 1/2 cups in the am and pm....Different dogs have different metabolisms and needs...just use your judegement!

Cami is just shy of 2 years old and weighs 55-58lbs depending on the day. We feed Eagle Pack Holistic Select kibble and Wellness canned. She eats twice per day 1 1/2 cups of kibble in the am and 1 cup of kibble and 1/2 cup of canned in the pm for a total of 3 cups per day. She also eats fruits and veggies thruout the day as well as eagle pack, wellness, & natural balance treats. She is a treat-hound! She gets a treat evertime she comes in from outside, and alot of times just for being cute. She is not overweight.
