how much does microchipping hurt?

For those of you who have had your babies chipped, I am wondering how painful it is. Of course, we would have preferred to have Harry chipped when he was neutered, but our vet at the time didn't do chipping. I understand it's a long needle, but I really would like to have it done and not risk putting him under. Thanks in advance for your help.

It's a pretty simple procedure, they don't put them under to chip them. When I chipped Manny, he didn't even flinch.

it is inserted like a needle in the fur around their neck. Sandy didn't even notice when they did hers, but Napoleon acted like you were pulling his teeth.
I really don't think it hurts, it is probably just that they have to be really still for a couple of minutes.

Charlie Paper came to me chipped, but I took my bf's dog & my cat to get it done. It's just a needle between the shoulder blades and then its done. When they insert the rice like chip and it's just like getting a shot...but with a thicker needle, and it goes just under the skin. My cat actually handled it better than the AmStaff but as far as I could tell it's relatively painless. You won't regret having it done. His microchip has brought Charlie Paper home to me.

Its not so much that the needle is longer its that The needles used is a larger bore (thicker)needle than that used for vaccines. The actual microchip is the size of a grain of rice.

Some dogs act like your killing them, others don't act at all. I had my two pups done at 8 & 10 wks. The younger one didn't flinch at all, the older yelped for a second until he got a treat..neither acted like it was bothering them at all afterward. My vet wanted to do it when they were "under" during their spay and neuter at 5-6 months. I wanted it done ASAP because a lot can happen before 5-6 months old. Carson actually broke loose from his run 3 times! So I was thankful I chipped them when I did.

At the microchip clinic..all dogs were there..big, small, thin, fat, young and old..it didn't appear that younger ones, or thinner ones etc "felt" it more. Some acted like you were killing them, others yelped and were fine a second later, others didn't even notcie it at all

Zoe and Flash did not whine or even peep. Iwill say they did not look all that excited about it, may be a bit uncomfortable. But now it is done and they have that extra protection.

I forgot to add above that when they did it, the lady said Rocky had skin like a rhino, but his coat was really soft. I'm guessing if he didn't notice and his skin is thick and it took more to push the needle through, then the pain is minimal.

Just a reminder: Don't forget to update your information after the chip is implanted. Mine were great about getting theirs. I think it's much less painful than other procedures and animals get over things very quickly. Mine had forgotten they had been spayed by the next morning!! I had to keep them from bouncing all over the place.
