How much does it cost to own a dog?

I thought this was interesting......
As we all here at BW know there are a lot of people who do not consider the cost of owning a dog. So I thought I would post this for all to see.
I think this is way low as I know I spend more than $350 on food, more than $250 on vet bills and toys, but I dont have to worry about grooming either:D:
but it can give someone an "idea" of costs.

I need to shop wherever they do. No way can you feed a boxer for $350 a year (that's treat money)

Where is this vet that does a spay for $125?? My vet quoted $275 - $300

Toys $70 - what is that per month??

I guess this estimate was for large breed "dogs". Once again we must remember that boxers are not "dogs" They are way more expensive and way more worth every penny/dollar/hundred dollars ...

My vet spayed my girl and fixed my boy for 65 each....guess it depends on where in the country you are. Just for their kibble I pay 500 a year (estimating low). I also buy some canned to put in as well but i don't know how much I spend on that. Bullys cost me 45-50 every other month (I buy them in bulk), toys cost me 500-600 a year at least, not to mention extraneous vet bills and shots and exams and I just bought a dremmel for their nails, 100 bucks. I really don't know how much I spend and I don't really care. My dogs are "people" dogs and I'd don't ever really keep track of how much I spend. I know people that spend about 8 dollars a month on their dog's bg of food and that's it. No toys, no vet, no nothing. People like that shouldn't own a dog.

So far this year Tug's has cost me a grand in vet bills alone. BUT he is worth every single penny.

His daddy, keeps my toy buying to a minimum, but when I am out in San Diego next week I will come home with a few toys for him.

I just had to laugh - I spend about $350 in 1 1/2 months for food. Doesn't include treats - those are about $150 a month
One trip to the vet cost me around $225 (in the past 8 months I have spent $7934.64 on vet bills)
Toys is around $100 a month (yes she gets new toys every month)
Collars/Leashes/Crate/License/Misc. I'd say around $200/year.

Actually I figured it out, in the 6 months of actually having Clover (she will be 9 months on Thursday) she has cost me...$11,141.64 - mainly because of the many trips to the vet - but I wouldn't even bat an eye at spending more if she needed it. (Just a note, that 11 grand, doesn't include the cost of Clover herself) Just hoping she cost a little less in the next 6 months, oh wait it's Christmas and her birthday is coming up, so hopefully starting next March she'll cost less. LOL

Not sure where these people got their numbers, but maybe they should talk to Boxer owners

Let me see... how much to take care of my BooBoo and Courage...

$80/month for both on raw diet
$10/month for treats
$20/month for flee pills
$30/month for their health insurance
$20/month for the occassional toy...(I usually make my own toys)
$30/month for the occassional visit to vet, co-pay

don't remember how much the spay/neutering was, but it was covered 90% by the health insurance.

=$190/ month... just about $100 per dog... wow...it isn't too scary, but that's still a lot of money per month...

Has this author met a boxer??? I spend way more than that and it so worth it. Got to treat my little mush face like the queen that she is. I wonder if this is in Canadian dollars... anyone know the rate of exchange?

LOL. At first I wasn't going to reply because I thought people would think we were nuts for spending so much money on a dog. I'm relieved to see that we aren't the only ones spending whatever it takes to keep our babies healthy and happy LOL. We live in a rural area in Missouri and most of our neighbors just let their dogs run free and barely take the time to feed them. They think we are insane for treating our dogs the way we do.

I never added what I've spent so far on Hogan and Hilda, but I can tell you that the cost is not only ours.....My neighbors and family buy them treats and toys too! I wonder what their monthly cost is in addition to ours?
