Hey!! Cain is now almost 7mths old. My vet said around 6mths cut back to feeding 2x day.. Well When I did that I swear he was skinner than ever. hungrier than ever. and wasn't himself. He was always pacing by his bag of food. He seemed like he was always hungry. So I went back to 3x/day. Now he's no longer pacing. Should I just keep to this schedule. How much should he be eating? I feed him like 2 3/4 cups a day(broken up in 3 feedings). I ask my vet and he just says follow the instructions on the bag!?

You just have to play around with the amount. I still feed both of mine 3 times a day and Izzy will be 3 in June and Gus is 15 months. I feed them about 3.5 cups or more a day, and the bag says 2-2.5. I feed them Innova EVO. If I feed the recommened amount on the bag, they get VERY skinny. They are thin on this amount, but if I feed more, they just poooo it out. Just test it out. Try giving him more at eat meal if you think he is too thin. The bag is just a recomomdation, all dogs have different energy levels and metabolism. Good Luck!!!!

Thanks.. Cain is very thin. you can see his ribs. He was just at the vet and he said he is fine. But he must be going thru a growth spurt cause all of a sudden I see more bones. I'll have to up it at the next feeding. I'm just afraid of overfeeding. I did that with my lab and he is overweight. I felt horrible. I'm feeding Costco brand puppy food. The lady who does pet nutritions classes says if your on a budget this is the food to get. Thanks again for the advice.

Sable eats twice a day and she gets 2 1/2 cups in the morning and around 1 1/2 cups at night. She keeps her weight at around 60/65 lbs which the vet says is fine. Everyone is right you just have to pay around and see what works for each dog. Also he is still growing and full of energy. He probably burns off as fast as he takes it in.

Gauge eats like a horse !

Gauge eats 3 to 4times a day. It depends on the dog. If he is skinny feed him more or feed the same amount you use to in three feeding but divide into two. Gauge is very active and he is 17months old. He gets a good amount of food to 2cups Canidae and 2cups Orijen mixed with 2 tablespoon yogurt and 1.5 cups of homecooked chicken/carrots/spinach/broccoli. He is the perfect weight according to my vet. He eats like a horse lol but burns it of fast. Each dog is different and requires different amounts of food at different stages in there lifes.

You might want to try a higher quality food. You may pay more for it, but you will feed thim less of it. So, it kinda evens out in the end.

I agree. Higher quality foods are somewhat pricier initially, but they make up for it in a healthier dog (reduced vet bills long term) and in the fact that you can feed less of the food for the same nutritional value.

You might also check the RAW subforum. I don't feed raw so I can't say for sure, but a lot of raw feeders say that that's the healthiest AND one of the cheapest ways to feed.

Cainsmommy..

My little Caine is 7 months old as well.. I weened him off of 3x a day around a month ago. I slowly took a 1/4 cup from his lunch and added it to his breakfast.. i took 1/4 cup one day and fed him that amount for 3 days and then took another 1/4 cup and soo on.

Caine now eats 3 1/2 cups a day two times a day. ( so 1 3/4 cups each meal) I feed him Canidae all life stages. The food is good, he really likes it and it's not that expensive a 20 KG bad is around $54 CDN and lasts about 5-6 weeks.

when Caine starts to get skinny again as he will through his growth spurts i up his food about 1/2 so 1/4 each meal and he seems to do just fine.

Like everyone else says. it just depends on your dog.. but i would recommend changing his food to a higher quality which i think should make a difference.
