The cost of microchipping your dog varries mattering on your location. For my boys, I paid $25 each and then I had to pay another $12 to get them registered. As far as any bad effects, if it's done correctly there shouldn't be any complications. Both of my boys got chipped while they were still under during their neutering procedure. Here is another link with more info.

Check to see which microchip is also being used.

Home Again - 1) cost of chip 2) registration (one time - and NO FURTHER fees for changing your information....ie: phone number, address, contact people, etc).

Avid - 1) cost of chip & registration is generally included in one price (pre-paid registration that the vet has already paid for) .....but the catch is ANYTIME you want to change ONE thing, they will charge you again. (right now, its $15 for everytime you need to change even a phone number).

Me personally, I won't use Avid.

Another avenue....keep an eye out with your local boxer rescue group....I know we have microchip clinics as a fund-raiser, and we do the microchipping at a reduced rate. :)

Is it true that you don't necessarily have to register them since the registration service knows that your number is registered to your vet?

I heard that some people choose to not register so that their vet gets contacted first, that way if they forgot to change address with the service, your vet can find you anyway.

On the vet receipt, it says Microchip: $71. I think that includes the cost and the “installation” of the chip.
On the form it says:

Change of Address/Information: FREE
PETtrac Registration – Avid Microchips: FREE
PETtrac Registration (all other microchips accepted): $21.40
Change of Ownership: $21.40
Collar Tags: $2.50

On our form, there’s animal identification, owner information (including my driver’s license number), medical information, microchip implant facility, alternate contact or breeder (I’ve got my dad listed with 3 phone numbers :D)
