How long does it take for our puppy to learn his name

Hi,

How long does it take for Marley to learn his name. He is 8 weeks and we picked him up 6 days ago. He is so cute and expectedly an attention span of a gnat . He has learnt sit and he does sometimes listen when told no. He doesn't seem to respond when we call him by his name.

I know what you mean! We just got Jolie and she's been here about 3 weeks. She's just catching on to her name bit its probably because I could hardly remember it at first!

It depends on the dog. My grown dog took about two weeks when we adopted him and my boy when we got him at 8 weeks took a month or so.

You can help the process by some training - it's called "loading/charging the treat". Call his name and treat, over and over and over. Do this several times a day until you see recognition. Then stop giving treats each time, every 4th treat, then 5th, then 3rd, making the treats random and replace it with cuddles or an ear scratch. He will answer to his name in no time!!!

We have used this method many, many times with fosters & rescues. IT WORKS ! when we rescued sam , his name was "sheba" yes he is a boy ! so that had to go , sam learned his new name in 2 days ! ( "sam" = treat ) so he was all about coming to find me when i said "sam" ...

It only took Lucy about 10 days to respond to her name, she doesn't always come but she turns her head towards whoever says it and she is just over 8 weeks old
