Hello All

Well I have 5 month old boxer and he is great at home with us.
We love him so much.
(SLEEPS ALOT IS THAT NORMAL?)
But as soon as we take him out or even someone comes over he is like and exposed nerve!! He just jumps and jumps and jumps. We so NO NO and pull him off but he does not calm down. We have a neighbor that has a 4 months old boxer who is so calm.

We do leave him at home in a crate but recently we have been leaving him out of the crate to very little destruction (just a little accident now and then)

Also the chewing phase.... how do you work with that???

Thanks again this group is great!!

Can't remember if mine slept alot at this age or not. Keep in mind, if he plays hard he'll sleep more.

Try placing him in a sit each time he jumps up. Don't allow him to break the sit until you give the command to do so. Another thing I found helpful w/ our 3 was to place them all in a down when company came over until the "new people" thing wore off. Usually took 5-10 mins for all 3 to calm down then I would allow them up only if they stayed calm.

The crate thing sounds good although you want "0" accidents. If your pleased w/ him the way he is then leaving him out of the crate while your away shouldn't be a problem. The most effective way to house train (no matter if it's toilet training or training not to chew things up) is to prevent accidents from happening at all, not just minimize them. Mine were not left alone w/out being crated until they were about 1 1/2 yrs old.

For chewing...Each time you catch him chewing on something other than what he's supposed to take the item away and replace it with one of his things. Once he starts chewing on his thing praise him. I have a litter of 6 week old pups who are learning very quickly what "No" means. I've got them now to where about 75% of the time they will stop what they're doing if I say "No". I also can use my low, growly kinda voice and say "Ahh, Ahh" to stop them from going after something they shouldn't be. If they're headed towards the hall (not allowed there) I'll say "Ahh, Ahh" and they'll stop, move their ears around, kinda whine, look around and kinda hop up and down in one place then turn around and head back to the front room. Of course they are showered w/ kisses and praise as soon as they turn around.;) When one of the cats is just *way* to tempting for them and they do run down the hall I simply say "No" in a firm voice, pick them up and cary them back to the front room. As soon as all 4's hit the carpet they're showered w/ praise and kisses again.

Hope this helps!:)

As Alisha suggested, your boxer needs to learn to sit when he is greeting people. It's impossible for them to jump when their butt is parked on the floor. :)

I would highly recommend that you take your boxer to obedience class, if you haven't already. You will also find lots of previous posts on jumping if you do a search on it.

Lots of praise and consistency is the key. Good luck!

I use a "sit/stay" command for Olli when company comes over. It works well.
He is put in the sit/ stay til he has calmed down. Usually takes about 5 minutes. And if he starts to jump and get too hyper again he goes back in the sit/stay until he calms down again. Usually it only takes the first sit/stay to calm him down. When he was younger i had to use a short leash to help with the sit/stay. Cause he would sit down for maybe a minute and then he would be back to jumping and carrying on. So to keep him from getting away without sitting and staying i used the leash to reinforce the commands. It helped a lot. Hope this is of some help to you.

I agree with the sit/stay approach. I personally don't like the down when visitors come because this is such a submissive position. But whatever works best for you in your own situation is what you should go with. Also, I totally agree with the obedience class idea. I go with every new pup I get. Every dog has a different personality and what worked for one might not work for the new dog. The objective eye of the instructor helps me pick up on this. :D

We try to get out two to sit or down whilst company arrives too. We've found important to let our visitors know how to handle the situation, we tell them to ignore them as their squeals and raised voices tend to excite our two even more!! Another tip my trainer gave me was to bring your knee up, which stops them from jumping up immediately. Neither of our two get any strokes and cuddles unless they are sitting for us, and any visitors are told to do the same.

Another way is to put a gate up, like a child gate - you can get higher ones for dogs from somewhere like Petsmart - this way they can see everyone still and won't feel too excluded :)

Best regards

OMG, and so embarrassing when they jump with muddy paws! With Diablo, I put him on a leash before company comes in, then of course he scrambles for a toy so he can jump up and share it with my friends. evilicon
With the leash, I can get him to sit more easily until he calms down. Then he just wiggles :p This may be more effective if you have him in training at the same time.
