My boxer Oliver is 10 months old, and loved to death, but lately he has been spending most of his days in the back yard only coming in to train, cuddle and go to sleep in the evenings after the kids are in bed, because he is just to rough around the babies. We go for a walk after dinner and sometimes he stays in after that but it seems like less than more lately. He is scheduled to get neutered this coming tuesday and I hope that helps, but is there any way I can specifically teach him to be gentle with the kids. He even is rough with my 8 yr old daughter to the point that if he is in she will mostly stay out of the room. Jumping mostly but if anyone gets pushed over(and they do) he postures over them until I come to the rescue he won let them up. We also have a lab who is 13 and she just knows to be gentle around the kids, she also helps keep Ollie at bay but she is old and cant do it all the time. I think I have tryed so hard to teach Ollie "gentle" when he was being bad( by saying in a stern voice "No Ollie gentle" and pulling him off) he might actually have the word confused now. Any help would really help us out. Thanks!

How is Oliver going to learn to be gentle is he spends most of his time outside? Maybe when Oliver tends to get too rough with your children, put him in a time-out for a few minutes. Or put his leash on and tie him to a door knob for a minute until he calms down. When Oliver is playing nice, then praise him with "a word" and give special treats. Hopefully he will associate nice play with special treats and gets to play with your daughter.

Are you practicing NILF with Oliver? Have your 8 year old participate with the NILF and reward Oliver when he plays nice.

Does Oliver get any exercise? Maybe when Oliver comes in doors he has too much energy pint up.

Maybe someone else can offer better advice.....Good Luck and don't give up on him, he will get better. He just needs to be taught the proper way
