I am interested in knowing how each of you came to have your first boxer (for example, why did you choose a boxer or did it choose you, did you do a lot of research or did you fall into the breed by accident . . . )

In other words, what was the deciding factor in you getting a boxer for the first time?
:)

My husband has liked Boxers and thier reputation for years and always wanted one. He also has always liked thier look.

We bought a house in May of 1998 and by September we got Ruby; like we couldn't wait. We went to the breeders "just to look" at a puppy she told me about (I met her at a show) and we fell in love with "the puppy".

I can't imagine not having her around.

Great topic!!

I fell in love with Boxers when my husband took me to my first dog show about 4 years ago so I could meet the breed. (He grew up with one.) He had gone on and on since I knew him about how great a breed the Boxer is, so I was pretty much convinced to begin with, but when I pet my first smoosh-face Boxer I reached a point of no return. I guess I didn't expect them to be so baby-butt soft, cuz they just look so tough from a distance. I looked at my husband and said "He's so soft!!" I had tears in my eyes and I was sold!!!!! As soon as we got our first house, Clyde wasn't far behind.

Now I'm more of a Boxer nut than hubby is! I told him the other day that I'll have a Boxer by my side til the day I die!

I was allowed to pick out my first boxer when I could barley walk. It's one of my very first memories. I chose, Brandy, she was a sweet, fawn puppy with a shaped flash on her chest. She'd let me put her in a little toy shopping cart and walk her all over our town. My other childhood pass times also included dressing her up and blaming all the bad things I did on her. But she didn't mind at all :). I still miss her.

My dad had a boxer when he was growing up, named Queenie and I think that was how our family first fell in love with the breed, he started breeding home raised boxers when I was about 9. My uncle also adopted a boxer from his shelter when he got his first house. (My dad now lives in an area with a lot of older people and doesn't breed boxers any more due to a lack of good homes nearby for their high energy life-styles)

My dad wanted a boxer. As for me - I wanted a GSD or a Dobbie, I thought boxers' faces were scary I know you gonna kill me for that :D). Then I looked closer ...and found boxers are great dogs, friendly, gentle, energetic and great character in general - the best choice for me. Now I can't believe I could dream about a Dobbie that time... oh, no - boxers forever! ;)

My father-in-law bought my husband his first Boxer when he was about 16. He was a big brindle and white dog called Benji. Unfortunately he died when he was only 8 years old. My husband was devastated, especially as he had moved away from home when Benji was only about 1 or 2. However, he visited his parents that Xmas holiday, and that's when Benji died, almost as if he was waiting for his master to come home first. Then his parents got a brindle girl, Shanna, and she died 2 weeks ago. she was 9.5 yrs and had a tumour in her head. they are still very sore about losing her. so when my husband and I got our first house, the next thing was a dog. I had never owned a dog before and so we had a Boxer, because we knew about them, and we had young children and so I was concerned to have a breed that would be good with kids. Billy, is beautiful and we all love him so much. We now also have a Rottie, but nothing can compare to a Boxer, it will always be my favourite breed.

Completely Boxer Crazy
After I fell in love with a neighbors boxer puppy at my parents beach home, I told my entire family that when I "grew up" and got married (I was 18 at the time)that I wanted a boxer. Within a few days, a skinny fawn male boxer walked into an industrial shop where my brother was working in Baltimore. I fell head over heals for this little brown man. I will always feel that we were meant for each other. I named him Mugzy and we spent the next 10 years or so together. He passed away 2 years ago on the 26 of this month. I will always miss him.
Here is a link where you can see pictures of Mugzy. He is the one one the seadoo with my Dad and also being smushed my the Mastiff.

3 years ago my daughter wanted another dog for Christmas (we have a 9 year old, 14lb. Cocker Spaniel). I had been saying NO to this idea since I am always the one to take care of the pets. I finally agreed that we could get another SMALL dog but my husband had a boxer when he was a child and thats what he and my daughter decided they wanted. I read alot about the Boxer on the internet and I had some reservations about it but when we went to pick Nino up I fell in love right away. NOW he's my boy. My daughter keeps reminding me that her name is on his papers :) I would never again own a breed other than the Boxer.

Boxer Pal
Our only son had moved away to go to college about 2 hours away. I must admit I was suffering terribly from the empty nest syndrome. One day I looked out my front window and there were the cutest puppies out on my neighbors front lawn. I told my husband about them and I said there is one puppy that strutted around like he was king of the world. I begged my husband to go over with me so we could introduce ourselves and see the puppies. I still had no idea that they were boxers. We fell in love at first sight. Of course we picked out the one who strutted around like he owned the world. Buddy was then 3 weeks old so we spent the next 5 weeks at the library reading everything we could about the breed. We knew we had done the right thing. At 8 weeks of age Buddy came to live with us and we've never regretted it. He is definatly a very important part of our family, and yes he helped fill the void in our life. He still struts around like he owns the world but that's okay because he definatly owns our heart. I will never ever consider another breed of dog.
