How cold is too cold...

Rocky Pup

Boxer Buddy
I'd like to continue to take Rocky on walks in the evening when I get home from work. It helps to get rid of some of his energy from being crated all day plus is good excercise for both of us. Would a 30 minute walk in 30 degree weather be too cold for him? I figured the movement would keep him warm but I'm also considering getting him a coat (Fido Fleece). He loves the snow so I know he doesn't mind the cold.

 All I know is that I live in California and if it was 30 degrees, you would not catch me outside!

Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

I take Xena out every night for a walk. Sometimes it gets as cold as -30c!! In that extreme cold we cut the walks to 10 min. Xena lets me know when she has had enough, and I can tell too when she shakes..then it's time to come in! Playing in the snow is her favourite winter sport. She reminds me of a little kid swimming in the water with blue lips and chattering teeth..."Nnnnooo, I'mmm nnnottt cccoolddd"!!:D The only thing that concerns me and I watch closely for is salt on the sidewalks and streets. When salt gets into the underpad of the paw it burns and is quite painful, and may even cause bleeding! I wash Xena's paws everytime we come in!
And BTW...Xena would NEVER let me put a coat on her or sweater. Ya think she caught Madusa's eye, cause she becomes a stone statue when I try to put one on her!

Just like humans, it depends on what they are acclimated to. If the dog never felt anything colder than 50 degrees and then bring them into a 30 or below...sure, they'd be cold at first. Maybe try a little at a time.

I'm no expert...lol

But I noticed in my own experience for instance, the first cool/cold weather after a N.O. Summer it may get 60 degrees and I could swear I'm gonna freeze. But now that it's been a consisten 40 degrees on most days latelly, now if it hits 60's I'm in a tshirt driving with windows open.

Completely Boxer Crazy
As I just recieved Roxy not to long ago, with my shepherd and my late Duke (Boxer) we used to walk even in the coldest weather, it does not effect my shepherd, but Duke could feel the cold, so I bought him a cool sweater coat...and from that day on he loved going for walks in the cold, and as Sharon said it can get up to
-30 up here....but the best part about a nightly cold walk it getting home...jumping on the couch with mom for some cuddles and before you know it....everybodies warm !!!!!

Keep Warm !!!

I also walk Georgie everynight ,we do 2 km no matter the weather as the weather does not bother her she is always on the go so she keeps warm I think ,she does not like a coat .

I know it can be hard in the winter to keep up a regular exercise routine for your dog. Its been hard the last couple of weeks with so much snow, ice and cold temps. If its really cold and the dog is obvioulsy not enjoying it - keep it short and find some indoor activities to make up for it. But I wrap both my up in their lovely new coats http://www.dogcoats.com/products.htm and get out their as much as possible.

We have had to take mine for walks in the morning before work recently because of the craziness at night due to the holidays coming. It is around 30 when we go (4:45am  ). Rita wears a scarf around her ears because she can be prone to ear infections and she also has a little "jean" jacket that she wears sometimes. Munson is all boy and doesn't need a scarf. He does have a fleece and a sweater that he will were, but they are more for looks. :) I think 30 deg for 30 minutes is fine.

I think that as long as you keep her warm and keep the walks short then it will be ok! Perhaps a coat and some boots may help.
