Jackson my 8 month onld son eats and eats and eats, it just that he will not seem to get any thinker!!! He is about 50 lbs of bones and skin!! I love him to death, but I really want some meet on his bones. He currently eats dry dog food, with some occasional table food, but not too much. I used to feed him wet dog food with the dry, but he just digs his way to get all the wet food...i have found one dry food that he seems to like, which i am staying with,....he eats alot, but needs to put on the pounds.....HELP ME OUT....its my first boxer...and i need to know the hints and tricks!!!

I sometimes have the same problem with Ali (she's 16 months old) - she's ok now (although some people still think she's thin). Some of the suggestions given to me included cottage cheese (she still gets some with her brekkie), canned fish (she loves it), bananas, and more raw meat (she's on a raw diet). Are you feeding Jackson twice a day? Has he been wormed recently? Does your vet think his weight is ok?
Good luck, and let us know how you get on!
Michelle.

It is very common for some of us to have thinner boxers. Lacie is defiently one! Im trying something new though. A friend of mine suggested giving her some peanut butter everyday. Now she is only talking about 2 tablespoons , so we are on day 3 and I will let you know in a few weeks if it works.

I would not worry too much, what brand food do you have him on? I feed mind a High in fat 18% and 27% protein it is highly digestable, little waste. Alot will depend on his body structure, if he dosen't have the size you cannot get it, but alot of people do not realize how immportant diet and Have you had him checked for worms? possibly Tapeworm, often goes undetected..must actually see worm in stool.
How large were your dogs parents, how was there breeding show or working? This is a good indicator of his potential. Just remember all Boxers are wonderful no matter how large or small!

He doesn't really sound that undersized to me. How tall is he? I just hate to see people giving a lot of fattening food like, cheese, peanut butter and such to young dogs. Just like the rest of us, the time will come when he tends toward overweight.....and he is hooked on "fast food."
If you think he will eat more of his good quality kibble, if it has a better flavor - you can try mixing some canned food with HOT water, just stir it around in a container with a fork. Moisten his dry food with this gravy/gruel and he might eat more without seperating out the canned.
My dog Mack eats about 50% kibble and the rest comes from things I add that he loves. Cottage cheese/yogurt, blended vegetables, eggs, canned mackerel and assorted meat - ground chicken,turkey/beef or liver or heart.

At 8 months, he weighed about 60 lbs. He is a big male, 26inches at the withers and weighs about 87lbs. He will be 2 in a week.

JacksonsDad,

I am so excited, another person here in the Carolinas!!(I am in Charlotte). Your baby sounds fine, I was wondering, are you feeding him puppy food? My vet told us to keep Angus on puppy food until his 1 yr. b-day and it is a bit more fatty than adult food....

Secondly, I am always concerned about our Southern dogs being on heartworm preventative, it is so prevalent down here and it is awful for the dogs to get rid of, so if you don't have him started, do so!

Our tricks with Angus to eat his food are (1)Mix hot water and this gravy stuff (comes in plastic squeeze bottle) you can buy at Petsmart or jbpets.com with his dry food...Loves It! (2) Mix warm cooked oatmeal with his grub in the morning and he eats it right up....My friend Molly has a REALLY picky eater and her Riley loves dry dog food mixed with hot water and sprinkled with parmesan cheese (Angus likes this one too).

Hope these help, let us know.

Leezah & Angus :)
