How big is your Boxer's car cage/crate?

We have a dog guard behind the rear seat of our Land Rover Defender station wagon and Lulu travels in that area when we don't have any cargo. However, we'll soon want to go camping which will mean the back seats will have to go down and the camping boxes and gear will take up quite a lot of space so we'll need to put Lulu in a cage/crate to keep her safe. I'm trying to gauge the minimum dimensions required to comfortably transport a fully grown Boxer female. I'd be interested to know the dimensions of BW members' car cages for a single Boxer.

My dogs wear seatbelts which I attach to the tie downs in our suv, so I am not much help with a crate size. However I travel frequently with my dogs and take quite a lot on my travels. Our solution was to get a cargo carrier for the top of the suv. We got a midsize one. It holds about 16 cubic ft of stuff. I've seen some that I think hold about 24 cubic ft.

I don't know the exact dimensions, but we use the second largest crate available. We use a traveling one, that had the slots on the sides of the upper portion, and a wire door. It has nice little places to carry it and use tie-downs. You needs just enough room so they can stand up, lie down and turn around. It was spendy, but worth it for my baby.

Good luck and have fun camping!

we also use harness that we clip to seat belt of the car (seat belt leash) so i am not much help concerning the crate size.
But i would think you could leave 1 seat up at the back, fold the 2 other ones. I think that will take less place than a crate for your baby :)

Yes, we have been looking at that possibility this afternoon and think it will work. The rear seat is divided two thirds/one third. We thought possibly the one third might be a bit small but plenty of room on the larger section for Lulu to lie down. Having the girl just behind us will make her happy and then the whole of the cargo area can be stacked because, in the past, with our late JR we could never stack anything over her crate so there was wasted space. We have just ordered a harness and seat belt attachment and we'll give it a go.

Thanks to all of you for your input. Great site this. To think it was only 4 weeks ago today that we found the poor girl almost dead on the street!

Oscar and Mali each fit in a 36" long crate. Oscar does not like riding in a crate, so he rides in the back seat wearing a seatbelt harness and Mali rides in a crate. If your Boxer is bigger, she may need a larger crate. The next size up is 42" long. I have this size that I take to trials for Oscar and he likes it better, or dislikes it less that the 36" crate. Oscar is about 22" tall at the shoulder and weighs about 58 pounds.

Yeah, my boxer is around 67 pounds and where I don't transport him in a crate, his crate at our home is 42". He CAN fit in a 36", but he can't stand up complete (with head up), so I wouldn't recommend that size for a long trip, but it's do-able.

We also use a harness with seatbelt attachment (basically a leash that attaches to the harness and the other end is the seatbelt that goes into the seatbelt buckle. My SUV has the same 2/3 1/3 split and my Boxer fits fine on the 1/3 side as does my German Shepherd (who is bigger than most Boxers I've seen)...obviously not together, but separately haha. So you may want to give the 1/3 side a shot, which would give you more room for cargo.

Good luck and enjoy your trip!
