Did you mean that he was fully trained at 10 months? Because a fully trained 10 week old puppy would be something short of a miracle.

Hi Ehayes21 -the answer to your question of whether or not I go outside with him is yes for sure each and everytime so I can ensure that he actually goes potty and isn't just messing around. I am beginning to wonder if he will ever figure out to go on his own since I always go outside with him. It seemed like my other dogs just figured it out by this point, but I will keep working with him. I always read stories posted by people about puppies who are housetrained by 12 weeks or earlier and wonder where I have gone so wrong? Hopefully one day he will just get it and the troubles will be over. Thanks again for everyone's suggestions and encouragement.

We slowly eased Johann into going outside by himself once he was 100% housebroken. First we'd go out and stand just a few feet away from him....gradually increasing the distance until we were standing on the deck while he ran off and peed (fenced in yard).
Now we usually just open the door and run out, but sometimes he'll stand there until you come out on the deck with him and then he runs off to potty.
It does happen eventually. We were so frustrated at times with Johann's housetraining (first puppy), but it did eventually sink in. Hang in there.

LOL. While there may be a miracle dog here and there, I doubt you will find very many fully housetrained 12 week old puppies. Most people that claim that are really fooling themselves. You might find an accident free pup, but that is certainly not the same as being fully housetrained. Just keep up the routine and the suggestions that Gmacleod gave you about tethering the dog to you. It will happen. I promise. My girl was very hard to housetrain and she was finally reliable at a year old...so you're certainly not alone in your frustration.
I have an even more peculiar problem though...
Candy will just not do potty inside the house... but peeing.... oh my goodness.... and the worst is that she licks it clean...
I am pretty sure that she has no UTI or anything... but the fact that she pees in the house even after taking her out every couple of hours is frustrating...
I cant seem to break this habit of her...

Have you taken her to the vet? If not, how can you be sure she doesn't have a UTI?

I have 2, 12-week old puppies and anyone who says their dog was potty-trained by this age is lying! haha. I don't think that is quite possible at all! My pups are confined to only my living room/kitchen area so I can supervise them all the time. I have a baby-gate in the hall way and another one leading downstairs to my door. I find what helps when they are this small is carrying them outside (quickest way to prevent accidents in the house) when they wake up. During the day when they are playing, once they start going by the stairs, it's time to take them outside. I had to put the baby-gate at the stairs because once they learned to go down them, all they wanted to go was go up and down even when they didn't have to go. I take them out 5-10 mins after they eat, 20 mins after that, and usually every 30-45 minutes during the day. I know it definitely gets tiring (I have 2 to deal with over here who need to go out separately!)..but I rather run up and down those stairs than complain that my dog went in the house...afterall..it's NOT the dogs fault..it's our own (Remember that). Repeating the same word every time you go outside is very helpful, it lets the dog associate that word with what they have to do. My previous boxer never let us know he had to go outside..like another member said..he trained us to take him out every so often..which I think is a good thing..we have to learn as "parents" to take them outside and NOT be angry when they potty inside.
