We dont seem to be getting very far with housetraining our 16 week boxer. We tend to get most poo's outside, but he still creeps off occaisionally to the upstairs landing or bedroom and drops one! Peeing is a different problem. We can let him out for 10 mins and he will come back into the warm and do it on the carpet! We do try to put him out regularly, especially after he wakes up, but with kids to see to and a busy house to run, we cant follow him around every minute. The breed supplied an information booklet with the dog re food health etc, and this said he will not be fully housetrained until 6-8 months. Is this the case? and are dogs harder to train than bitches?

Thanks

Don't get discouraged. My Tucker is now 5 months and is now finally trained. It was very hard. We would and still take him outside and tell him "Go Pee!" It has been 3 days and no accidents inside. My vet told me to watch very closly as to where he was going inside and it was always at the top of our steps. We didn't allow him to go upstairs for a few day and now he's doing great and actually sitting at the door until we see him and let him out.

I hope this helps!

Hi Macus,

A "keyword" when he goes helps. I tell Georgie to "go toilet" if I know she hasn't done either, "wee wee" or "poo". With Georgie it has taken a long time to get her house trained, she completely ruined our stair carpet which we've now chucked out. Males are apparently easier to house train though. We got Frank six months ago and is practically house trained but does have little accidents now and again but for some reason he had never cocked his leg, even outside he just stands there all regal like :).

Another little trick I taught Georgie is:- we have a key in the door which has another key hanging from it, I taught her to tap it hard against the door when she needs to go out which alerts us. Since then we've had no accidents indoors whilst we are in the house. She only pees when we are at work but that is slowly fading, thankfully. I've read other messages on this board and some people use a bell tied on the door.

Try keeping to a routine as well. I know its hard with busy lifestyles but in the long run it does save time having to clean up after the little critters.

Good luck
Sue

Each dog is different, it would seem and it also may depend on the training methods you are using. Housebreaking isn't easy, for sure.

I would recommend hitting the "Search" icon above and doing a search on housebreaking and see all of the threads that discuss this subject. There is a plethora of information in these threads from others who have all been through various problems with housebreaking. You'll find lots and lots of suggestions and information and referrals to books and web sites, etc.

Good luck.
