Hot spot and bumps.. Help

Hey every one. I'm new to BW, but I'm so glad I found this website. I have a 13 month old fawn full blooded boxer. His name is Coach.

In October I noticed a spot on his back leg (on the outside) Looked like a couple of clusters. I took him to the vet and the Dr put him on 2 types of medicine. He was on them for a month and it seemed to help a little but he got hurt and had to get off that medicine to get on steroids for a month. He was on those until Thanksgiving and now that I have him off everything I'm trying to take care of the hot spot on his back leg. I know it itches him really bad because that is what caused it to be a hot spot. He would just eat at it.

I used tea tree oil, neem oil, and olive oil mixed and I'm happy to say after 4 days it is gone. (That was after paying $90.00 for one bottle of medicine)

My question is the last 2 weeks I've been seeing bumps come up on his back. There are none on his belly or inside of his legs. And his face is not swollen or anything. Could this be an allergic reactions? I'm scared of mange and etc. We are very clean people and my baby is spoiled rotten. He is crate trained and stays in there while we are not home. So I don't think he has gotten into anything. He does eat my dryer sheets. (out of the whole load of clothes he finds them and runs off with them!!)

Has anyone else experienced this problem and what did you do for it?

It sounds like it could possibly some type of allergy to something (food, treats, environmental.) What medicine did the doctor put him on first? Did his skin seem fine while on the steroids? Did your vet ever do a skin scrapping on him?

Hey Thanks for the help. I'm not sure what the medicine was called. His skin was fine while on steroids.

How do I tell the difference in allergies or mange??

A skin scrapping should let your vet know if it is mange or not.

A lot of the time when it is an allergy, steroids seem to work great BUT it does not cure the problem, it's only acts as a band-aide and usually comes back once it is stopped.

Swollen ear

Has anyone had any experience with a swollen ear, just one ear and it fells like it's full of air. I am guessing it is some type of infection and will go to the vet tomorrow to check out, but just curious if anyone has any ideas.

in the past, one of our girls had an ear that was as you described.
the vet said it was where blood vessels had broken and the ear was engorged with blood.
she had some kind of allergy causing her ears to itch, and she shook her head and ears so vigorously that the blood vessels broke.
she had to have surgery where the inside of the ear was drained, and the ear stiched together in lots of places to close up the voids left behind when the blood was drained, and to encourage the ear to adhere to itself on the inside again.
after the surgery, we got a handle on her allergies, and never had the problem again.

Does he seem to be itching these bumps? Are they spreading any?
When Tyson had hives, the vet gave him predisone and that helped.
Mange usually involves loss of hair and scaly skin.
Mange is an immunity problem. I gave him a can of sardines 2-3 times a week and a vit. c tablet once a day.

I would call the vet to make sure what it is.
