we recently bought a 3 year old boxer which we love very much. so far he has been a great companion with one exception. he always trys to jump on our 3 year old daughter and hump her. Murry (our boxer) is not fixed.
the people we bought him from were using him for studd service, and we are thinking about doing the same with him so we want to hold off on getting him fixed untill we decide for sure wether or not we will use him for studd.
does any one out there have any sugustions on how to get him to stop doing this to our 3 year old? any help would be appreciated!

Humping is nothing remotely sexual, it is a dominance display. He is trying to tell your 3yr old that he is higher in the pack than her. Try and get your daughter more involved in the dog. She can feed him, she can get him to do commands with some treats, if he humps her she should stand up and firmly say NO, SIT! All with your help of course, but she should get involved

And unless you have a few thousand to spend on showing and health testing your boxer, neuter him. We dont need even more badly bred, sick boxers in this world (which is what his puppies may be if he doesnt fit the boxer standard or is carrying any genetically inherited diseases).

i couldnt agree with you more on this subject. plus it seems the dog has done his "business" poplulating the boxer world let him be a dog and enjoy the good life with his family.

The "humping" is not sexual--its a dominance display--I agree with Checkers suggestions on helping your daughter assert her position over the dog.

Also have to agree with the others in regards to neutering him, sorry! You say the "people you bought him from" used him for stud--but you don't say if this was a reputable breeder (all health testing done? show success? "proven litters"?) or just some BYB who wanted to breed their dog? If it was a reputable breeder--there is probably a reason why they chose to sell him rather than continue to use him for stud, which would make me think he is NOT a good stud prospect! so...unless you are prepared to health test your boxer and have him evaluated by someone qualified to assess his confirmation/breeding (like a show judge, etc) then please don't breed him!

Leave the breeding to the professionals and just enjoy your boxer, don't add to the world of BYBs and ill-breed boxers. I don't mean to sound harsh, really, so please don't take this as mean-spirited but rather as well-intentioned advice for the good of not only your dog, but the potential puppies you are considering breeding!

Humping is usually a dominance display, although neutering can certainly reduce the dog's urge to hump!

No way a reputable breeder would sell an intact male that was still eligible/good enough for proper stud service, without knowing your intentions. You bought a dog that someone used as a backyard breeder, and when they were done with their stint as a stud service, they got rid of their dog. How sad that the dog was unwanted once they decided they no longer wanted to breed him!

If he is three, I wonder when they started studding him out?? A dog should be a minimum of two before it is even considered, as health testing can't be fully and accurately done and assessed before then.

If you are going to discuss your intentions to become a backyard breeder or offer stud service to other backyard breeders on this site, be prepared, you'll be banned, and for good reason - irresponsible breeding practices like this are the biggest contribution to the deterioration of the breed we love so much. Check the rules!

And please just get him neutered so your family can enjoy him as a lovable boxer!!

First off you need to post an introduction in the introduction forum. This is required by all members of this site and should have been your first post. It is stated in the rules that you agreed to when you joined this site.

Secondly we do not promote back yard breeders here so unless you have health tested your dog and have proof of his passing the holter, hips, etc etc, and you submit this to the site owner, then discussion of your breeding him is not acceptable here. This is also in that rules.

Thirdly, your dog and you would be better off if you neutered him and he would make a better pet for your daughter. Stud dogs are often a handful and not the best for a pet in a family situation a lot of the time. Please research the health testing here and the breeding recommendations before studding out your dog, and be sure to submit all proper testing documentation to the site owner.

We appreciate all the good advice give regarding our 3 year old daughter.

Regarding the comments about breeding. Were NOT offering Stud service on this site or any other, nor are we BYB's. We simply stated that he is 3 years old and the person we got him from used him for a stud, perhaps we would look into doing so. He is papered and health tested and we have documentation showing so. I can not say for sure weather or not the previous owner was a BYB'er, nor do we care. We have a healthy happy Boxer to love.

Please do not start a debate. We just wanted advice regarding our daughter. Look forward to getting to know everyone here. We'll be sure to post an introduction and show pictures of our Murry.

welcome...i don't think anyone was starting a debate.you just have to understand that boxers are our babies..not just our dogs.i know myself i
got 2 of my babies from BYB's.one passed when he was only 4 months old.
so we here tend to get a little upset when one is THINKING about doing so.
and also,just because a dog has "papers" doesn't really mean THAT much.
my Max is AKC registered but he is neutered and i wouldn't consider him
being a "standard boxer".you can find lots of great info here.

and...when we brought Max home at 7months old,he humped EVERYTHING!!!!he did stop when
we got him neutered.sice i have two small skin babies..5 and 2,i just felt better getting my
fur-babies fixed.

The thing about advice is it is not something you always want to hear. By giving descriptions of your situation you have opened the door and must be prepared to hear ALL that is given, not just what you want.

Breeding is taken very seriously on this board for good reason. We LOVE the boxer breed here and have seen some very horrible things happen when dogs are bred carelessly. This does not mean we think you do not love your dog, merely that you are not informed or educated on the subject enough. Most BYB's (and I am not lumping you in this group) do care for their dogs but are ignorant of the damage they are heaping on the dog and the boxer breed as a whole.

A dog must have "genetic" health testing done to prove he/she is not going to pass on any bad genes. It is not an ok from the vet during a routine check. The heart & hips are tested, these tests are very expensive and only after a dog reaches the age of 2. The dog must also prove itself in the conformation ring. Show dogs are not about behaviour. It is about an impartial judge checking to make sure the dog is up to the breed standard. AKC papers have nothing to do with any of this, it is merely a registration of your dog with the American Kennel Club.

Please know we are not coming down hard on you to be mean, we just love this breed. Please use the search tool and do some research so you can familiarize yourself with all the requirements of being a good ethical breeder. Good Luck.
