I hate to ask yet another feeding question but I just have to. I have been reading a lot on raw, barf, homemade diets, etc...And for me it's going to come down to what's healthy for my dogs but also what I'm comfortable with as far as preperation goes. As of lately Casey (age 4 mos) has been eating CS kibble and Wellness canned. She's not a big fan. I have tried a few different kinds of canned, she'll eat some but not what I think is enough. So, here's what I was thinking....how about if I made my own homemade canned mixture and added it to a high quality kibble. I made a stew type mixture consisting of chicken, potaoes, carrots, sweet potatoes, and peas. (it's cooked) and when I mix that with dry food, she gobbles it right down! I know raw's better, but if my idea is okay, I'd rather cook her up a big pot of stew. This would be an ideal feeding method for me (and she just loves it)...I hope it's suitable for her. Any information would be much appreciated. Thanks :)

Yes, you certainly can :) And it's a better way to feed your dog than buying commercial canned food anyway.

In fact, if you take a look at some of the best canned foods available, you'll find that they contain meat and broth. Nothing else. So if you want to make the highest quality "canned" food you can, a good way to do it is to take a whole chicken and slow cook it for 24 hours or more (less if you happen to have a pressure cooker). The resultant mushed up chicken - including soft mushy bones - will be equal to the best canned foods you can find on the market (probably better, since I bet you'll start with better quality chicken ;)).

What a wonderful idea, that really appeals to me, I suppose you can use any cuts of meat, add a few carrots and potatoes and then just keep it in the fridge :)

I used to homecook and add to my dogs' kibble, but after awhile, it really got to be too time consuming trying to plan and prepare a variety of meals in addition to cooking for my family. It may not prove to be that much of a hassle for you if you only have one (I have four), but feeding raw has been so much easier for me. ~ Cathy

Thanks so much. I feel much better now :) Casey thanks you most of all. She much prefers her stew & kibble. Yay!!! I can feel confident about giving my girl a healthy diet and watch her lick her chops while she waits for her meals.

When Kiddo was on chemo I went the home cooking way. I would simmer a pot of chicken add in either rice or oatmeal a touch of garlic and a pinch of parsley....I'd make a stock pot full that lasted for 3-4 days in the frig. With each fresh pot,we all ate the same meal.

I make the cooking process real simple. Cook alot and freeze it as far as the meats go and the vegi and fruit ( if I feed it) goes in fresh depending on what's in the house or if I use frozen vegis they get cooked with the meat.

So I like this idea. Vegas has lots of allergies so it would be nice to control the ingredients.

If I were to do this it wouldn't be somthing he would get everyday. So my question is.....How do I give this to him without having him starting to demand it at every feeding and protesting his dry kibble?

I can see that being a problem with him for sure. Any suggestions?

if he doesn't eat the dry kibble take it away and have him skip a meal. He will learn quickly to eat when its available after missing a meal or two.
