Thanks to all the responses from this great site!!!! We are just loving this little pup, and the nights are getting much better! So how about the potty training??????? She has no regular routine and as often as I take her out she still has lots of accidents!!! Sometimes she gets to the paper and sometimes she doesn't even try! She is only 3 months old, and I don't expect her to be trained completely (she is not fond of the cold weather but seems to tolerate it for short periods to do her thing)......I'm sure the spring months ahead will make for better training conditions. She doesn't seem to want anything to do with the papers for bm's. We give her lots of praise and a doggy treat for her use of the papers or outdoors. Are the papers confusing her????? Would love to hear your experiences........I've never gotten a puppy in the winter before, espiecally a short-haired one. Thanks!

Holly we were told by the breeder to not paper train her, because that will be another step that you have to eliminate before she is potty trained. When Haylee was a pup we limited her to the Kitchen and took her out quite often, especially right after she ate. When she does her business outside you have to praise her a lot, and a little at a time extend her priviledges to the other rooms.I forgot to mention giving her a treat afterwards. Even then the pup may have accidents here and there. My pup is 10 months old and when she is not in the same room I always check to see what she is doing. Never leaving her out of eyesight. Most times she puts her head on my lap and looks towards the door, if I miss that signal she will keep coming back and forth. No barking. So I must be in tune with her needs. Of course it wasn't too bad, since I do not work. Good luck with your pup's potty training, I hope this info will help you out. bye Mar

Take her out after meals, after play, after getting up from a sleep. Take her outside to a spot where you want her to go, if you always take her to the same spot, thats where she will go. Also if you want to bell train her, put a bell on the door you use to go out and have her ring it with her paw or nose everytime you go out, she will associate this ring with going outside. Ring the bell everytime you go out with her. After awhile she will start ringing the bell when she needs to go out. Even if she has an accident take her outside to her spot and when she does something praise and reward. Its takes patience but it works. Like Haylee said paper is not good because you will only have to train her to do the same from there. We got Ozzy when it was cold outside too. I kept my winter boots by the back door and jacket and carried him outside to his duty spot, then showed him the stairs and called him to his spot and he would sniff around do his business. If you have paper with urine on it put it outside where she has no go and she will smell the urine there.
