We just found out that our 5 month old boxer has a growing disease called HOD. Basically her joints in all her legs are inflammed and she growls when they are touched. Right now she just lays down and doesnt do anything. Our vet gave us some pain medicine and some antibiotics. This disease also causes dogs to have fevers. She hit 105 yesterday, but today the fever has gone down. Have any of you had this problem with your new boxers? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks :)

oh dear. my puppy just died from this horrible disease. Get in contact with me I have some very promising antibiotics that helped my little girl, but unfortunetly couldnt cure her because the disease had ravaged her body and we didnt start her on them soon enough. First of all.
-start her on large breed puppy food or adult food right away. If you leave me your number on a private message i would be happy to give u a call as I have tried a lot of the things that were prescribed to me. I would hate to have your baby die like mine did

It seems like that we have caught the HOD in the early signs. Phoebe is now getting up on her own and tyring to play with our beagle. However I'm still making her take it slow. It hasnt even been a week since my wife and I have adopted her and we both love her as if we have had her since she was born. I just hope that this is the beginning of her recovery!!! Thanks to those who replied!!

HOD in Pittsburgh

Our puppy who's about 5 mo old has also been diagnosed with HOD. It actually hit him about 2.5 weeks ago, and the vet had him on an IV for several days with an anti-inflammatory, pain meds, and an antibiotic because he went in with a high fever (104). After about a week, he was doing well enough for us to go on short walks, but he wasn't back to his usual self yet. A few days ago he had a relapse and now he's back to not being able to get up and walk around on his own. The vet is going to try a different anti-inflammatory today (the old one doesn't seemed to be working despite an increase in the dosage). We'll see how that goes.

Im sorry to hear about your puppy! I know that it is VERY hard to watch them try to walk and they cant. Sometimes it brings my wife to tears. I dont know if this helps or not...but the vet recommended that we put frozen peas on her joints (if she would let us). We went home and started doing this and to our suprise Phoebe let us! I dont know if this is helping or not, but I'm willing to try anything! Keep us updated on your puppy. Have you changed her diet in anyways to a low protien/fat diet?
