Hives!!!

Hi all--

Baxter, 7 1/2 months was recently diagnosed with demondectic mange. The vet prescribed cow/swine serum and everything has been fine for two weeks. Yesterday I came home to find him loaded with hives. I calle the vet and gave him the 1 adult benedryl as instructed, but it didn't touch them! We then took him up for a shot which got rid of them last night, but now they seem to be starting again. He wasn't eating well a couple days ago and then had diahrea for a day and the only thing I can think of that he had differently was the pedialyte I gave because of the diahrea. Any suggestions? He is now well otherwise.

You can give 1mg per pound of the benedryl. It usually comes in 25mg capsules. So, 2 pills for a 50lb dog, etc....I would try and find the culprit of the allergic reaction (hives). Have you changed laundry detergent, used different household cleaners. etc? I hope he fells better soon. I have used pedialyte in the past on dogs and cats, I don't know what they could be allergic to in that except possibly one of the flavored varieties. Good-Luck!

Tomi used to get hives all the time. For no apparent reason that I could find. He would become swollen around the face and even throat. My vet prescribed prednisone. It is a steroid and shuts the adrenal glands down for a short period so that when the dog is TAPERED off of pred, the adrenal glands will kick back into action and start to release their hormone, adrenal. Adrenal helps with the allergic response in animals and humans, sometimes it needs an additional kick to start
Talk to your vet about it. Some vets do not like to prescribe pred as it has down falls, but with allergies, it is very helpful and helped Tomi out a lot when he had really bad hives, etc.
The diarrhea is just because the system his upset and he isn't feeling well. Pedialyte shouldn't give him diarrhea, but it could. It's used to hydrate the system from when they become dehydrated from lack of water, or diarrhea. If I am not mistaken.
