My baby is 4 1/2 months old and was out playing in the front yard with the kids. When he came in he had little welts on his head some on his sides and legs.
He has had in the past some rashes with little bumps in his ear that we treated with some cortisone cream. Anyways we soaked him in the tub in Aveeno oatmeal bath to help with the itch.
Could he be allergic to grass or what??
Any ideas?

Possibly, Diamond has broken out into hives before also and I believe we gave her some benadryl and they went away. But I think she got bit by something because she hasn't had an allergic reaction like that since or before that (besides a bee sting incident).

Izzy had broken out in hives a few times. Twice I believe was due to an allergic reaction to vinyl (once she licked a decal I had on the front of my t-shirt and another time she licked an aerobic ball). Another time she had an allergic reaction to something she ate. We gave her benadryl and the hives went away shortly after. I cant recall how much it is per pound of dog you should give them. I usually call the vet and ask

Consult Your Vet First

Our previous male broke out in hives from the grass, and we also used the benadryl to control the itch and hives.

However, your pup is only 4 1/2 months old, so before you give any over the counter meds please check with your vet. Any OTC meds that I give my dogs has already been approved by the vet along with the doseage and timeframes.

Okay so this was to be a reply to the Hives Thread, but I had a "Blonde Moment" and made it a new thread instead. I need one of you friendly mods to merge this to the Hives thread where it belongs. Thanks

Sampson broke out in hives very badly TWICE last spring. The first time we totally freaked out and rushed him to the vet were he received two shots that made the hives go away. The next time we gave him baby Benedryl. Worked like a charm. Come to find out, he is allergic to the neighbors cottonwood tree that hangs partially over our fence. We just keep Benedryl is stock in case it happens again!

My first boxer Lillian would breakout into hives very often. Unlike humans, dogs show their allergies in their skin where as we get the sniffles. I finally had to have her allergy tested to find out what she was allergic to...she was allergic to almost everything including me! Several types of grasses, trees, humans(really), fleas, and cockroaches to name a few. I had to start her on injections(can be a little costly) and her allergies and breakouts got much better if not disappeared. I also started bathing her with an oatmeal based shampoo recommended by my vet. Benadryl is just a short term fix but it does work. I would recommend getting some allergy testing and treatment for long term benefits. Good Luck!

Hives? Thanks for all the response!

Thank you to everyone who responded! Well, at least right now I know that others have had the same experience.
If we have another bout with hives we will look into allergy testing. I must say Aveeno oatmeal bath really made him feel better. Its all natural but leaves the tub gross!
