Hives and benedryl

While we haven't experienced any hives with Apollo yet, he definitely has allergies! The vet prescribed Tavist (1/2 pill twice a day). Our vet prefers Tavist to Benedryl because Benedryl will make the dog sleepy and/or lethargic. Apollo's been on the Tavist pretty much daily all summer and it's helping somewhat. At least he hasn't had a repeat of the sinus infection that he started the summer with (due to allergies). I'm looking forward to the first hard frost to kill off whatever it is that gives him the runny nose and eye goobers.

lillibirdy, what happened to Gunner also happened to Scrapper. After the cortisone wore off and I stopped the prednisone pills, the hives came back in force. I agree with your suggestion to examine the food ingredients. Apparently, there are a number of food items that can trigger allergies in Boxers and there are a couple of foods formulated expressly for allergic dogs. Natural Balance, especially the duck and potato, and California Natural, I believe are two of them.

Try to observe if the hives get better or worse at any particular time. Scrapper's hives seemed to be worse in the morning when he awoke, but would sort of recede during the day. I took to giving him the benedryl at night before bedtime to ease the itching, although the hives still came.

I also changed his food and washed his fleeces in natural hypo-allergenic soap. Fortunately, the hives disappeared after about five weeks and have not returned. I took to putting a doggie t-shirt on him (gotten at Old Navy) during the day to keep 1) him warm (this was in winter and we thought there might be a chance the hives were a cold sensitivity), and 2) to keep his fur from contacting any outside allergen. I think the T-shirt actually helped a lot, although it's not designed for a male dog's anatomy and we had to pull it up in the back with a rubber band to, uh, allow him room to pee...

This can be a long, frustrating process and I wish you luck in discovering what's giving hives to your babies. I really didn't want to continue with the steroids for a long period of time. On the other hand, the benedryl seemed to have no ill effects (I didn't notice any sleepiness) and I could continue it for some time if need be. Maybe they can outgrow this, we are keeping our fingers crossed for this winter with Scrapper.

Well as Alice in the rabbit hole says, this just gets curiouser and curiouser! Gunner had his last benadryl at 1 PM today it is now 1:30 in the morning over 12 hours and I have not seen any more lumps. I did wonder if it was his nylon collar the first time, and has just put that back on before this last bout, so that was removed right away. Also he had been running amok rolling in the grass yesterday with his buddy knuckles so wondered if it was that, and oatmeal bathed him. Anywhoooo, not sure whats up, but I am still considering all the diet and testing advice.

Lucy's mom, yes I would like the name of that "something stronger" instead of benadryl that your vet gave you. All I know is I am never going to not have these with me!

Are there any of you out there that keep your babes on steroids full time and if so are they doing ok, and for how long? I did that with our Sharpei, her quality of life got a little better, but shortened her life as it did ruin her kidneys and they shut down, so I am just not going there unless it is a last resort.

Chance takes "medrol" which is a type of steroid. When I first started giving it to him he got 1 tablet daily for 5 days then 1 tablet every other day. So far I have been able to maintain him at the 1 every other day or 1 every 2 days. He has been on this for several months now. I believe it is a 4mg tablet that he gets. I do worry about the long tem side effects of using this but it is a low dose and somtimes he scratches so much he rips himself open :( He is on Purina HA (HypoAllergenic) which I special order from the doctors but still has alot of airborn allergies also. I have tried other drugs stronger than benadryl like Atarax and I think CPM (shortend for somthing) but they did not help at all. I also bath him in a special shampoo to try to help his skin problems.

lillibirdy - Lucy's vet prescribed Hydroxyzine. I looked it up in Drug usage book and it has several uses for people, one of which is an an anti-histimine. Her prescription is for 3 50 mg tablets per day as needed for itching. I haven't and don't plan on giving it to her everyday, but maybe it would help you in interim with Gunner until you can figure out what might be bothering him. Good luck.

We also have the hives problem - in fact we have a nickname for Sampson when he starts getting them........ Bumplestiltskin. heehee

Anyway, we can't figure out what it is, but we manage it just fine now - and it only happens maybe 2-3 times a year. Could be bugs, something blooming or other surface allergans.

Vet says the hives are the body's way of fighting the allergan, so the hive starts & turns into a little pustle (bleh).

"Bumplestiltskin" :) doesn't seem bothered by them at all, but we do give Benadryl - and he is 90lbs so we give 2 every 12 hours.

Additionally we have a shampoo called "Nolvasan" that we bath him with when it occurs in the event that the allergan is something ON him - this removes it & prevents any type of infection.

It works great b/c in the past, the hives were followed by hair loss & now that doesn't happen.

Vet also says giving him his Omega 3 Fish Oil capsules & feeding a little garlic is a good way to go - boosting the immune system.

Good luck!
