Hives and benedryl

BTW- you can use daily for treatments just like people. Brutus takes 1 bendryl a day in the summer to help deal with his allergies. He takes a benedryl in the morning along with fatty acids and biotin and we have not had any allergy problems this summer.

I would take to your vet first but benedryl can be used for inhaled seasonal allergies.

Allergies

I called my vet a few days ago because Dia was having sneezing attacks where she would violently sneeze maybe 15 times in a row on and off all day. She said allergies and recommended we try Benadryl first before going to the more expensive cortizone shots. 1mg per lb so she gets 2 at a time (hidden in a cottage cheese snack). This appears to be working. The allergies just started about a week ago and I am hoping they won't last past the summer months. I wonder if anyone has noticed a little more of a "laid back" dog with the Benedryl. I think I have. I know if I take Benedryl it knocks me out for the whole night! sleepicon

General also had sneezing fits a fe weeks ago. Gave him benedryl and that helped out. He gets really tired when I give him benedryl. Daezy99, are you still coming to G'Dale?

Change of plans and I am not coming :( I am sorry I didn't let you know sooner. Let me know if you are coming through Yakima and I will let you know if I'm heading over that way K? :)

Ok. I know I will be coming thru either Sunday or Monday but it is really up in the air when. My husband has some training in Wenatchee and we aren't sure when we are leaving. This trip probably won't work but next time will try to meet up with you.

The last couple of winters Lacey's paws get irritated, in between her toes. The vet told me to give her 50ml. twice a day of diphenhydrmine. She weighs around 80lbs. Yep, she's a bit over weight, comes with age.:)
Does any one else's baby have paw troubles? I think the med helps but, it's not the greatest.
If I'm remembering right, I believe she had hives a couple of times when she was younger. She hasn't had those for a very long time now.

i have a 10 week old white female "maya" and ive had her for a week... the last 2 days she has develped hives...went to the vet he told me benadryl..today was great then all of a sudden she developed hives again...i gave her benadryl and they are still there...is it possible that her immune system is still weak because of her age? is there a chance of her growing out of it? does cortizone work better? someone please help

Hello Dawgs, the hive episode might last for a while, until the allergen causing them is gone. They are very common in Boxers. Scrapper had them for an entire month last January. Cortisone actually works by depressing the immune system so there is no response by the body to the irritant, thus no hives. It's better to not use it too much if you can avoid it. When Scrapper would take it, for some reason he always had trouble peeing the day after; little dribbles and spurts for five minutes or more to empty his bladder. I finally decided to only use the benedryl if at all possible. Hang in there.

how can i determine what the allergen is? she can be in contact with it the whole time and then they'll never go away...i just feel so bad ...she looks so uncomfortable...i wish there was something i can do for her

I had an incident with Memphis this past Tuesday, she had hives so bad her whole body was a big raised lump. I was on the way to the vet and she stopped breathing!! I totally freaked and was a block away from the vet and tried to drive my jeep upon the sidewalk to get her there. People thought I was crazy! They gave a shot of Epi (not sure how to spell the whole word) and a shot of benedryl and a steriod shot. They let me take her home and the bumps would go away and appear in another place. She is doing much better today but she still has a couple that are lingering around on her hind quarters. They pulled out a stinger from her muzzle, a wasp most likely. But I believe something else is also playing a part in the bumps. So, I too have been giving her benedryl daily too keep them at bay.
