Any idea how big they get ?

I believe that they develop from any skin irritation such as a bug bite or a scratch. It is an allergy type of reaction most common in dogs under 3.

As Draymia said, it can be treated with iodine. My breeder has been treating them that way and they always go away.
The only thing is if it's on a white part of the coat the iodine will stain.

Roxy had one also. The doctor took a needle biopsy and all was ok. Within one week, it was gone. It was under her armpit. Sissy :)

Elmo had one surgically removed on the side of his face and another on the top of his head went away on it's own but only after a year. They closely resembled the one on your dog's paw. Most vets can tell they are histiocytoma just by looking at them. Our vet took one look and said, "yup, it's a histiocytoma."

My rescue had one when we got him. The doctor gave us some type of ointment and then some type of drops. I had to rub it in for 5 min. He also licked it constantly but we did get it to go away without surgery.

hystocytoma(sp)

My pancho had one on his back paw and our vet removed it relatively quickly, we did not even try the other treatments.. I will say our after care was somewhat difficult. Our Pancho is very limber and the cone/lampshade did not work at all, he would get at his surgery site and take off the bandage, so all I can say is if you have the surgery make sure you can watch them.

histiocytoma

Yep, looks just like Kaya's histiocytoma she currently has in her ear. My doc said it's all part of her allergies, that they develop from over-production of the histo-cytes or something like that, hence, histamine, histio-cytoma, the root is all the same: allergies!! So, my doc gave us prednisone to stop the production of histamine. He said that should treat the root problem. Also gave me Otomax (since it's in her ear), and told me to clean 2 x day with hydrogen peroxide. It's helping already!! Good luck, I will also try iodine / betadine.

When we first got Junior he had one on his hind rump - brought him to the vet and that is what she said it was. His wasn't as "raw" looking as yours but it was still one. Vet said that they go away on their own within a few months, just to watch it. Sure enough, almost 2 months to the day, it was gone. He hasn't gotten anything like that since!?!

Thanks again everyone!

As predicted the growth has dried out and is starting to shrink.

Mac can be a lean mean licking machine, so I'm glad its going away on its own - getting it to heal after surgery would have been a nightmare!

As always, I appreciate the feedback and experiences.

Tracey and Princess and Mackenzie!
