Ok well Casper has ulcerative colitis of boxers and was one very sick baby boy. But with the special Diet and Medicaition he is doing much better. My question is Baytril is a fairly new drug and I have read past post that mentioned the study with 8 boxers and 1 bulldog (I think) that recovered well using this medicaition and my vet also refrenced this study. Well I have been in contact with my vet almost daily and he started Casper out with a 7 day perscription of Baytril because of the side effects. Well Casper used all the pills and ran out on Thursday of last week. Well by Saterday his poo was almost liquid again. Has anyone used this drug and how long did you have to use it? My vet is having a hard time finding a time frame that they need to take this medication. And anyone that has had a boxer with this illness can you please tell me what to expect? I have scoured the internet, this board, other board, my vets brain. And I just go from one emotion to the other. So happy because he is gaining weight to crying afraid I'm going to have to help casper over the bridge.

Can't help with any personal experiences with that medication. But ulcerative colitis is a disease that boxers are somewhat prone to - so it is worth doing a search of the forums for previous threads that may contain others' experiences and perhaps some good advice for you. One thing I would note (and could be worth your while considering) is that colitis is a disease that very often responds extremely well to natural raw diet. Really - for some colitis dogs, it can be close to the "miracle cure", so perhaps worth your while to investigate.

We had the same problem and our vet did extensive research she found the right combination of drugs to cure (at least temporarily) the colitis. I don't know the actual dosages, but he was on Baytril, metronidizole and amoxicillin. I think he started with 8 pills a day and the slowly, after weeks, we started weening him off all the pills. He was on some combination of the pills for at least 2 months, but he finally got better and has had no problems since he went off the medication over 6 months ago. I highly recommend trying this - it is the only thing that worked for us.
