histiocytic colitis

My 8 month old female boxer has histiocytic colitis. I have taking her to the vet and have spent thousands of dollars on surgical prosedures, medicine, and food. She is still having bowel problems and blood in her stool. I have talked to the vet about it but he says there is really nothing left to do but give her a shot of Vitamin B12. Does anyone know anything else about this dreadful disease and other ways to control it?

Thanks

My boxer also has colitis - We spend 2 weeks and thousands of dollars as well as UC Davis only to learn there was not much more for us to try. Thats when I was turned on to Hills Prescription z/d Ultra. This has been a miracle food for my boxer. He has very few bouts of colitis now and has managed to gain back his weight. Its certainly not a cure, but its done wonders for a dog that UC Davis said was the worst case they had ever seen!!! Good luck and keep me posted on your baby!! ;)

What are you feeding her? Did your vet tell you about the Hills prescription food, Amy mentioned? If not you should definitely try it. I have heard several success stories once the diet was switched. I hope ypur baby feels better!

Hills Prescription also makes I/D- which is designed for dogs with colitis, IBD or intestional problems. Amaya suffered from a bout of colitis and the food was a big help.

It is also common for dogs with frequent colitis to be put on metronidazole. It can be used long term if needed although it is best to try to wean them off if possible. As a last result predniszone can also be used or sulfer based drugs.

What drugs/food has you vet tried.

Unfortunatly, my experince with histiocytic ulcerative colitis was not very good. My first boxer I ever had named Howie was diagnosed with it. He always had bloody, mucosy loose stools. I never saw him have normal poop. He had an endoscopy done with biopsy's when he was about 11 months old and that's how we knew for sure what was wrong with him. We tried EVERYTHING, different food, steroids, metranidazole, sulfasalazine, tylan powder, you name it, we tried it. He really never responed to any of it but we had the most luck with the steroids. He acted normal, was happy, playful, eating, and drinking ok but everytime he went to the bathroom he had the problems. He always maintained a good healthy weight. I did alot of reading about it when he was first diagnosed and everything I read was very discouraging. There is no cure, you can try to treat the symptoms but it's not always successful. Some dogs seem to respond better than others. Howie lived to be almost 1 1/2 years old before his body couldn't handle it anymore and he went to the bridge :( Sorry to be so down but I just wanted you to know my experiance with it. Hopefully your little girl will respond better than Howie did. We will keep her in our prayers and keep our fingers and paws crossed that you find somthing that works for her.

We are having the same problem with our Lady. She is 9 months old and always has blood in her stool and sometimes she just has blood. She had an accident in Petsmart the other day and it was all blood. Freaked everyone out in the store. If we have any luck with a treatment i will let you know.

Hystiocytic colitis

Thank you everyone for your feedback. I appreciate it all. I am currently feeding her Eukabanea(spelling?), but I am going to talk to the vet about the Science Hill. At one time we where feeing Kangaroo and Oats, and let me tell you, that was an experience. We have her on the Metronidizole, and 4 other medicines that I can't even pronounce or begin to spell without looking at the bottle. She is the first boxer I have had and it tears me apart to see her the way she is. I am sure she is in pain, although she still seems to be somewhat energetic. She lays down alot more than before she was diagnosed.

Again, thank you for the feedback, and please keep it coming. I will let you kow what happens.
