Can someone tell me if older boxers are known for having hip problems? Our 9yr old male is not using one of his hind legs. He seems to be in a lot of pain and the vet cannot figure out what is wrong. We have had x-rays and other tests and I am very worried!!

I didn't know that it had much to do with age, but perhaps it can. I only know that hip displasia (sp?) is a common problem, but I don't know much about it. Perhaps you can run a search here and find some info. Maybe arthritis could be another possibility.

Good luck, and I hope your boy gets better!

Well, the x-rays would have showed if he had dysplastic hips or if it was dislocated so hopefully that's not the problem. Could he have maybe banged it on anything and it might be sprained (you can't really pick that up on x-rays) Also, are you sure it's his hip and not maybe his knee or foot? Did the vet give him any any meds? If he is not doing any better I would get a second opinion, it's hard to see our babies in pain.

Awww, poor guy. Since I am "in the trenches" of knee injuries (two surgeries in 6 months for Mack) I would be worried about an ACL injury or damaged meniscus. Neither of those will show up on an Xray
and he might need to be sedated for a proper manipulation and exam. Since that is where my head is at, I'd ask for a referral to an orthopedist.

Oh!! about the arthritis.....the vet says he has some, normal for a dog his age, but not enough to be causing these problems...

thanx

angelicon :( Thanx to all.....just to let those who are interested know....Shadow has gone to the bridge to wait for us. Apparently he had had a small stroke and on the 5th he had a big one that took him from us.

We are all sad and miss him much.

I'm so sorry for your loss :( It is so hard when we lose are babies. At least you know he is no longer in any pain or discomfort (I know that doesn't make it any easier). He is at the bridge playing and running around with all of our boxer babies and they are all waiting for us to be with them again someday and we will. You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers :(
