Have you tried Fish Oil (dosed around 1,000mg per 10 pounds)? It is a natural anti-inflammatory and works very well on my girl. I just give the regular human enteric coated version, she's 65 pounds and takes 6 per day. Also, microlactin works well on her also. And she's gotten good pain relief from Tramadol which is not a NSAID and doesn't upset her stomach or cause her more liver problems than she already has.

Oh also fund wise, you may want to look into Care Credit www.carecredit.com it is an interest free (for 1 year) credit card that is for vet, medical, and dental expenses only and is truly interest free for 12 months so as long as you think you'd be able to put the surgery on that and pay it off over a year's time it may be a good option, that way he can get the surgery now (if you're going to do that) and you don't have to save up, but pay off.

My girl was diagnosed with HD at 6 months old....and I was told I would have to make that quality of life decision when she was around 5-8 yrs old.

Recently (like a year or so ago) I switched her to the raw diet, with lots of joint bones (i.e. natural glucosimine that gets absorbed much faster than pills )

I then did Accupuncture for a year. She is now 8 yrs old and still launching herself off the back of my couch :rolleyes: I am sure that the diet and the accupuncture helped.

I try to stay away from NSAIDs long term, they have been found to cause liver damage.

I know in my heart that I bought my girl an extra 2-3 yrs.

I have to second this. Switching to a raw diet and accupuncture bought my friends GSD a good 5 more years.

Great tips! I will definitelly look into the fish oil and care credit, I had a friend that did that! Thanks everyone, I will keep you updated. He got up this morning and went outside but had another accident on the porch. He got on the couch too but won't come down. He's still not eating and refuses to take any "treats" aka meds from me. So, I take it as a little better but not great he just has the sweetest heart in the world and I hate seeing him like this. I'm sure he would give everyone here love if he could!

This may or may not help you, BUT when my dog was so ill and I needed to get his medications down him, even up to the last day he was with us the ONLY thing I could count on him to eat rain or shine no matter how he felt was raw eggs. So I beat up 1-2 raw eggs and crushed his meds (some were liquid) and put them in the beat up egg with a little bit of soy milk (non flavoured, no sugar, just plain soy milk) and he'd lap it up without question. He had a brain tumor and was force fed around the end but the raw egg and soy milk he'd eat without a second thought. Anyway, it may or may not work for your guy, but if it helps I figured I'd throw it out there.

Well, he is getting around a little better. I talked to his regular vet and she gave me alot of info. I am able to up his anti inflammatories temporarily, and he was able to go down the stairs to the yard today. It does look like surgery is inevitable though, she is calling me with prices and more info later today.

Im sorry to hear about Guinness. I just posted in another thread about rear end harnesses. Hartman harness and Help Em Up harness are great for both dog and owner. Saves on back problems. Give the poor boy a hug for me.
