I haven't been able to figure it out, so i thought i'd throw this question out to see if anyone else notices this...the day that I went to pick Tyler up after his neutering, he was very hyper (typical) but I noticed that his inner ears were red/purple, and his eyes looked kind of bloodshot. I'd never seen him like this before and asked the vet, but was told that he was just worked up. Ever since that day, whenever Tyler gets very excited, like when at the dog park or at the pet store, he turns this purple color (in his ears) just like the day that i picked him up from the vet. is there a reason why he does this now and never did it before his neutering? coincidence? and what causes it? thanks in advance for any responses:)

Shells, I was just searching for the answer to the same question. Only Dakota just started this out of the clear blue. He is a healthy active 8 month old male. and he has not been neutered, or anything else that may have provoked this. It started the other day when I took him for a walk his ears became a very dark purple. He was panting, and his tongue was out, but it was normal color. Then today my son had him out running for a bit and his ears again turned purple, but not as dark. Both times, as soon as he rested the abnormal coloring went away. We have a vet appt. for monday evening. I will be sure to let you know what we find out. In the mean time, I am seaching ....monday seems so far away.....

Ruby gets the bloddshot eyes and ears turning red and hot when he gets very excited after a long play (when my brother in law come visits). Lily gets bloodshot eyes when we have to keep her from going after other dogs on walks (she has to go after them even when they're just barking behind a fence). they do turn back to normal after a while. I agree with the vet that he's just exicted. I do not have an answer as to why it only started after his neutering. Just relaying my experience, hope it makes you a little less worry.

Most everything from the vet was positive.
She believes that even thought it has not been extremely hot, it is just too hot for Dakota to be exercised, therefore he was starting a heat stroke.
Here is the funny part, I have to start carrying a thermometer with me and when his ears begin to turn, I have to take his temp. if it is above 102 then I know he is starting to stroke and that the heat is the true problem.
We are still going to do chest xrays (to check the size of his heart) and a heart monitor to be on the safe side but his blood work and chest sounds were good.
