My one and a half year old female Boxer, Missy is recoverying from TPLO surgery. Just wondered if any of you have been through this with your Boxers. For any of you out there who doesn't know, this is a ruptured cruciate ligament in her knee. We are going tomorrow for her six week check up. Wish us luck. This seems like a great place....btw!! :)

Welcome Chad and Missy :D There are a few on the boards who have been through this type of issue. I am sure they can give you loads of advice. :)

Hi Chad, my dog Mack has been through two of these surgeries - one TPLO like Missy had and the first one was the "traditional" repair.
I'm a cyber-friend of Kristen's (grin).
Good to see you here, lots of nice people and experience.

Oh, I think I've heard alot about you!

:D I think you might be the one who is going to be fostering a new pup? Kristen is so excited about that. I'm just trying to learn more about this surgery, she suggested I read the e-mails from that other board she's on (the one that deals with ortho issues) She has her "boards" now I've found a board of my own!!!! How is Mack recoverying?

Hi Chad

My Billy has had 3 ops on his knees. First a traditional repair back in Nov 99 on his right leg. Then TPLO in May 01 on his left leg, and then TPLO on his right leg in Oct 02.

So yes - he's really been through it poor old boy (he's 6 by the way).

My best advice would be just take it slowly - literally don't run before you can walk.

As Billy has had so much trouble we have decided not to let him run free off the lead again - we have an extendable lead so he can still mooch about a bit, but as for running and jumping - they are big no-no's. Another thing we have started to do is to give him a glucosamine capsule every day. I buy the human one's because they're cheaper. Hopefully it will help his joints.

As we have another dog (a Rottweiler) we keep an eye on him in the garden too as they tend to want to play around, but we're just too wary to let him.

Anyway, I hope Missy is getting along well and good luck with the 6 week check-up - let us know how you get on.

Chad, Mack is one of the ones that has not done real well with his surgeries.....he has a lot of arthritis and just like Billy's Mum - we handle him like he's made out of glass. Always on leash, no running and playing with other dogs.
One of the "downsides" to this (you probably already know this) is that very often they blow the other leg.....For some reason, I just don't think this will happen with Missy. I have a feeling it was a "fluke" and something happened when she was playing with Cyrus (?) Speaking of Cyrus, that's going to be your biggest challenge in the coming weeks. She's not ready to be turned out to play with him.
I'm waiting on pins and needles to hear how her X rays and follow-up went.
(And yes, I'm the one that's going to be fostering the 4 week old pup - hold a good thought for us. I'm nervous about it...not only is he 4 weeks old, he's the runt of the litter.

Yes I will have to watch that Missy doesn't play with Cyrus. I tend to slack off os some of that stuff a bit, but I know I shoudn't. Good luck with the pup, Missy was the runt too, but she wasn't ever picked on, justt he opposite.
Billysmum...your poor boy had really had his fair share of these surgeries. Hoping that he doesn't have to have anymore. Missy checked out great at the Vets but she is stil pretty drowsy and groogy from being sedated for her x-rays.
They told Kristen about that same supplement that you have Billy on. How much and how many mg do you give each day? The Conseqin is way to much for us.
You have a Rottweiler too, huh? Our Cyrus is a Boxer/Rottweiler. He's such a good boy, but he's really Mommy's boy. I worry about this happening to him too.
Marlene. i hope your right baout missy's other knee. Sorry to hear that Mack's surgery's haven't gone so well. :(

Hi Chad

I'm glad Missy's checkup went well.

Billy has one 500mg capsule fo Glucosamine each day. He's such a greedy boy that I just put it in his dish with his dried food and he gobbles the lot up - it doesn't touch the sides.

I did read somewhere that someone gave their dog three 500mg capusles a day for about a month and then cut back, but I have to say I haven't asked the vet about correct odseage and that's why I only give him one. The doseage on the pack for a human adult is one or two a day and as Billy doesn't weigh quite as much as a human that's why I only give him one - He's about 73 pounds.

Thanks billysmum

My wife heard about a horse form of this in a powder that's exactly the same as glucosamine....cost's the same, but has alot more in it. Think we might try that route. Thanks for answering my question.
