I am new to boxer world, but not really new to boxer companionship. I didn't realize there was a whole website dedicated to boxers, this is awesome. I am the proud (usually) mom of a 2 1/2 year old fawn male.. Bronx is his name.. Bronky-do is his nickname. I have pictures on my profile. He is a beautiful boxer. He is a great kid. We also have a pit mix who is our other love. Oh ya, and three kids... ha ha ha. Bronx is an un-altered male that I got from a lady who was getting ready to take him to the pound. She said he was too hyper, and she was affraid of him. He was a year old then. She said that he growled at her all the time. Well, just from having dog's in my life, my whole life, this puzzled me. I wondered what she was doing to make him growl. Well I thought, Dexter needs a playmate. His brother had recently passed away from eating snail poison. My husband was in Iraq, and I figured it would be an awesome present for him to come home to. He loves boxer's, always has. I took Bronx out to the yard on a leash and begin the testing, since I have three small kids to think about, I wanted to make sure I wasnt getting a dog who would tear them to peices. Bronx and I went through many rigorous tests. I gave food, and took it away, I gave treats, and took it away, I pulled ears, layed on him, even smacked him to see what he would do. He passed every test with FLYING colors. Not even a growl. Through all the abuse, all I got was this look of "whatever I did lady, Im sorry!! stop hurting me". It was also clear that he had been hit before. He became our new kid. The hardest part, is that he had not been socialized, and had not been trained.. AT ALL. Didn't even know the "sit" command. A week later when I was working with him in the yard, I decided to get rough, play hard. I then found out, where the growling came from. He growls when he plays.. not when he is mad or fighting. Is this common? I mean he GROWLS.. its very intimidating to people who dont know him. My neighbors accross the street seriously thought I was being attacked. Anyway.. we are very proud of Bronx, he is a fully trained (as much as a boxer is willing to be) dog. He is great with the kids, and a great watch dog (notice I said WATCH). I am anxious and excited to read everyone elses experiences, and I have already noticed how similar other dogs are to Bronx. Thanks!!

The ferocious sounding play-growling is something I have only heard with 2 boxers; when Jazz plays with her Golden or schnauzer friends they don't get as riled up.

Boy, your fella and mine must have been mined from the same mint. My boy is Bailey and he is a growler also. At play time he snarls and growls and barks and acts like he is going to eat something (or someone) alive - hee hee. It's all in good fun, although it's tough for the grandkids to understand. Bailey is pretty hyper, as some of our furbabies can be, but then again he's only 7 months old. Anyway, just wanted to say welcome, and to let you know that your "toughie" has a friend in Ohio that acts just like him.
