I just joined a couple days ago but I have looked at Boxer World before as last year my 3 yr old male brindle, Banner, developed bald spots and our vet (little boxer experience) did NOT know what was going on....so thanks to BW postings for helping me figure out flank alopecia since it was new to my vet.
Now I've been searching the health forum again as Banner has some scabby dark bumps on the places where he's going bald from the seasonal flank alopecia, no itching the scabs flake off and take what little hair there is with them. It sounds like the same thing from a "scabby bumps" thread I just read which turned out to be folliculitis...I have an appt next week with the vet.
Banner is a doll but he's not nearly as pretty as he used to be darn it!!
When my husband and I were first looking into dog breeds we read up on several breeds and all the descriptions of boxer personality sold us....our first boxer was a brindle female, Brin, and the BEST dog. We lost her in 1998 and it took us quite awhile to get to the point of wanting another dog (she really was the BEST).
But we finally decided we HAD to have another boxer and brought Banner home in late 2002. What a good decision.
He's a big boy, tall and 80 lbs, but what a love. Nothing makes him happier than being with his people. When people come to the door and are intimidated by his size and they don't know boxers....they just have NO idea what a sweetie he is.
Ok, if you've been willing to read this book of an introduction and get this far.......Banner doesn't get on pavement much (our first boxer used to wear her nails done just from walking/running with us on city sidewalks) and so I have to maintain his nails. I don't like the clipper much (yes, I clipped one nail too close one time when he was little and he squealed and bled and now I have a complex about it!) and would rather file them down, but of course that's quite a bit of manual filing especially since his feet are mostly dark and the black nails are tougher/harder than the white nails. Any suggestions? Do I just need to stop being a wuss and just clip them?
