Hello all - I'm new to the board and will be a new Boxer daddy as well (very soon).

I've been snooping around this board picking up tidbits of info so I'm pretty much headed in the right direction to become a new Boxer daddy. I'm very excited. I have had dogs in the past, mainly Rottweilers but Boxers have always intrigued me and much more now after visiting this site.

I do have a question - would you prefer to have a pup before their 8th week or after or right about? I'm assuming most will say before due to the great feeling of having that "little" pup running around and seeing it be so cute when so tiny, but is it better in any way to pick up from litter at say 9 or 10 weeks?

Thanks in advance for any replies and I will post pics once I am lucky enough to find the perfect match!

WE GOT OUR BOXER BABY WHEN SHE WAS RIGHT AT 6 WEEKS. THIS IS OUR 1ST, SO I KNOW THAT WAITING TIL 9 WEEKS WOULD BE A BAD IDEA. I KNOW THAT IF I DID WAIT TIL SHE WAS 9 WEEKS BEFORE I GOT HER, I WOULD HAVE MISSED OUT ON A TERRIFIC 3 WEEKS OF HER LIFE. WOULDN'T TRADE THEM FOR ANYTHING!!!

Welcome to the group.. This is an awesome place.. I have heard that the best time to get your boxer is around 8 weeks.. I got mine at 4 mths and my other at 7 weeks.. I have had no problems with either of them. They are happy healthy babies.. Good luck with your baby.. They are totally awesome.. I too am a HUGE Rottie fan.. But with kids.. I feel much safer with my boxers.. They are SOOOOO good with them..

Hi and welcome to the forums! :) Congratulations on your soon-to-be puppy, I can imagine how excited you are ;)

Regarding the puppy age, I got mine when she was 7 weeks old, but in fact it's better and wiser to keep a pup with the mom and littermates until it is 8 weeks or older. Even 1 week makes a big difference! Too bad I didn't know it when I was getting my Tina.

Hi thre and welcome to BW nice to meet you! Congrats on getting your new puppy. Yes Marina is right 8 weeks is better a puppy learns a lot from its mom in its first 8 weeks of life and I beleive it can have its shots then. When I got Ozzy he was ready to go at eight weeks with his first shots, docked tail and dew claws removed. Can't wait to see some pictures.

Scorpio is right. A pup can have his first shots at 8 weeks. This also gives the breeder time to have the tail docked and dew claws removed. If you so choose, have the breeder crop his ears at six weeks though. This will give some healing time and allow the puppy to adapt. Welcome aboard and enjoy popcornico

CONGRATS NEW PUPPY DADDY!

I got Brodix at 6 weeks. And the only problem I had was that he did not want to drink water. He ate like crazy but the water thing was not happening. HE didn't know how to drink it I think. So I got a little bottle from the Pet Store and mixed a little formula and water and he drank it right away. I did that 2x and then when he went to the food bowl I splashed water around in the dish and put some on my fingers and rubbed it on his gums.

He finally got the picture after a few times of me sitting with him. Once he lapped up some water on his own he was fine. I am sure that he was used to his mothers milk and that is why he didn't know water or how to drink it. That was the only thing I noticed that was unusual. Oh yeah and he slept a lot the first two days I brought him home.

Other than that he a an energetic little guys who loves to play appicon

Hope this helps!
