Boxer Pal
We had our first encounter with this last week. Hemorrhagic gastroenteritis.
I had never heard of the affliction until then. Started about Friday with general lethargy and some of the most toxic gas ever. Saturday came and Spike didn't want to eat and was restless. Wanted to go out and would wander around and then want to come back in. He vomited Saturday night (very unusual) and wouldn't eat Sunday morning. Sunday afternoon he had diarrhea which became bloody by late evening. All he wanted to do was lay outside ( it was very cold) until he couldn't stand it any longer and then would come in for a little while before going back out.
We planned to see the vet Monday morning but the weather forecast was for snow and ice and his condition was worsening, so we made a midnight trip to the emergency vet. After ruling out other causes, they diagnosed HGE, and put him on IV's and medication. Two days there (and a whopping bill) and we brought him home - good as new, or at least as good as an eleven y/o rescue boxer/lab can be.
Has anyone else had experience with this stuff? There doesn't seem to be any specific known cause and the only treatment is supportive care and bland diet. The vet said he might not have made it another 24 hrs. as most dogs go into shock from blood loss and dehydration. From what I can learn, it is more frequent in smaller, younger dogs but they are all at risk to some degree.
Just wonder if anyone else has tangled with this and.or have any more information on it.
