peeing inside

I also have problems with my male. I always have the door open to the outside patio just in case he needs to relieve himself. He usually goes outside but there are times he will go right in front of the door or he will pee in the track of the sliding door. I dont get it ? one more step and he would be outside. The concrete is clean so its not like he is having to go in a messy area. Sometime he will unload right in front of me in the living room. I really dont think he is thinking about it. It's more like a split moment thought.
I do take him out side regularly. He just hasn't given me any signs yet that he needs to go outside. Thats why i keep the patio door open.
He does drink water alot but i assume that is very normal. Should i limit his water intake?

I read the advice about keeping the door open, so pup can help himself. I don't agree with that simply from experience. I too used to keep the back door open, thinking I was doing my dogs and myself a favor. They were pretty much house broken when I started to do this. The problem is that when the weather gets cool again and you can't leave the door open the dogs regress. This past fall Roo was only 9-months old and just getting over the "puppy hill". When the door is left open you don't always remember to praise them for their good deeds outside. Roo started to pee in the house again and Oz being male started to mark the same spots again. They're back to being house broken, finally after all winter. But this spring and summer the door will be kept shut. Also, when I see them sniffing a previously soiled area I give them a good stern "no" and redirect them to the door, so they can go out! Good luck and I can relate to your frustration!

Sincerely,
Kelly

Is Charlie neutered? If he's peeing on things (toys, discarded clothing, etc) it sounds just a little bit like a marking behaviour.

I would also suggest that you go back to the umbilical cord method. Every time he successfully pees in the house, it is just reinforcing to him that that is the correct thing to do. I think you need to be removing his opportunities to be making that mistake, alongside the standard method of taking him out regularly and going overboard with masses of praise whenever he pees outdoors (ie. does the correct thing). Going out with him and praising him madly is extremely important - without that, he isn't being told what the correct thing to do is and he is unlikely to work it out for himself ;)

That makes sense about not leaving the door open. I wonder why they make doggie doors though.

I have had the door closed though and he has pissed and pooped right in front of it without warning. I guess its part of the training trying to get them to tell you they need to go.

i know that leaving the door open to the patio seems like a great solution. however, the problem with that is that since the doorway is there, and the passage to the outdoors is constantly open to him, your dog is probably generalizing as it being that way all the time and is essentially not knowing the difference between where "inside ends" and the "outside begins."
a good idea might be to first keep the patio door closed, or at least a screen door closed. this way your dog will begin to realize what is
inside and what is "outside", and that in order for him to "be let out" he has to let someone know. next, go outside WITH your dog so that you can visually confirm that he does his thing and then praise him like crazy so that he learns that he did something that made you extremely happy. boxers love pleasing their owners and getting affection and treats, so try and incorporate all of those things when rewarding him for relieving himself outside. eventually he'll get the concept of going outside in the right place to pee.
it just seems that there were no boundaries established first hand so your dog is just confused a bit.
