Boxer protects kids from bear

LAUGHLINTOWN, Pa. -- A man says his missing dog is a hero.
Bill Rusko and his wife were cleaning out a cottage they own near Laughlintown, Westmoreland County, when a black bear began rushing toward their children -- 11-year-old Corey and 9-year-old Courtney -- and a 9-year-old cousin. The children were playing badminton at the Ligonier Family Cottage when the bear approached.
That's when Major, the family's 1-year-old boxer, ran circles around the children to protect them, then rushed the bear and bit it twice in the face and chased it away.
The dog then ran after the bear and into the woods -- and hasn't been seen since.
State Game Commission officials say bears can be dangerous predators, although it is unusual for them to attack humans unless they're provoked.
