Herkie has a UTI, what's your experience

I took Herkie to the vet Thurs...as he just doesn't "seem right" to me. His peeing isn't normal, meaning not a whole lot...but peeing on everything, restless...wanting to go outside all the time, and won't eat his food...but he wants mine! Anyway, she said he was the picture of health, but the next am she called me and said the one of his kidneys was reading a Level 1, but the other was 0. She also said his urine wasn't totally conclusive, there wasn't any blood in his urine or sperm..which she said is unusual for intact males. She had me bring in another urine specimen, which was fun collecting! I had nothing to collect it in but a Ziploc cup...so I'm sure my neighbors really thought I've gone over the edge ! The vet tech called me this am, because the Dr is off today, but said that he's showing signs of a UTI. Prescribed him Cephalexin 500mg 2x daily for 14 days...it was $63.02! OMG! Have any of your furbabies displayed loss of appetite with a UTI? And do ya'll think I should give him some yogurt daily as to keep the good bacteria in his system? This is my 1st experience with a UTI so I don't really know what to expect. Thanks for your help!

Poor Herkie, hope he feels better soon. Neither Holden nor Pete have ever had a UTI, but every one of my cats have suffered from these nasty infections. Frequent urination and straining are the first symptoms, sometimes accompanied by blood in the urine. Then the cats would eat, but less, and just lay around feeling "punk". Antibiotics were a must and often more than one round. Older cats would take longer to recover and frequently would have loose stools on the antibiotic. I do think yogurt would be good, at the very least it would taste good. Lots of liquids are a good idea.

At least dogs go outside, not outside the litter pan. These infections are very serious in male cats should they crystalize because the uretha is so small. Don't imagine it's the same for a much larger male dog.

Hope your Herkie responds to the meds in no time.

He does seem to have the symptoms of UTI, so antibiotics would definitely be a good idea. Give him yogurt to help return the good bacteria back to his gut as the antibiotics are going to kill them off.

I hope Herkie feels better soon.

Aww poor Herkie. Magoo had a UTI last spring, fortunatley it didn't come back the antibitotics cleared it right up but did give him some diarehia. I've also heard to put cranberry in thier water to help. His antibitotics cost $80!!
Hopefully Herkie will get to feeling better soon!!

Another great treatment for UTI's is Vitamin C. The bacteria has a hard time growing in an acidic environment. 125mg 2 times per day is a good amount for 55-65lb dog. We give Cami this amount daily in a chewable wafer form. She loves it. Offer lots of fluids, ice cubes, popsicles (sp?) etc....

My pup too!

My lil man had the same exact thing. I took him to the vet and they said he had traces of blood in his urine. They diagnosed him with an UTI. He also had some yellowish-greenish type stuff coming out of you know where. About two days before his anti. were finished his yellowish-greenish stuff came back, but the frequent urinating had subsided along with his excessive drinking. They proceeded to run test on him for his kidneys and bladder, but all came back normal. He still gets it every once and a while. Does yours?

I also heard about the yogurt, but it gave my dog BAD poops! You may need to see if your dogs stomach can handle it.

We've been on the anti-biotics for 2 days now...he's not drinking a whole lot of water. So he's still not peeing a lot, but it does seem like he's producing more when he does! I'm just going crazy right now!
